TBI to carb swap
My plans are to buy a 350 and rebuil it this summer, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen, so I ordered a kit from edelbrock for a 305 that comes with intake manifold, cam, lifters and a carb, I'm also ordering a 334 rotating assembly or maybe just a 312, it's goin to be a complete rebuild and I have almost every thing else I need (transmission, posi, differentials, etc.) except the engine parts, so what parts will I ned for the carb? What parts will I need to take off? (wiring?) and any tips from people who have done this? I know I'm going to get crap about not going with the 350 but I'm a high school senior without much money, I have two jobs now and a full time job already waiting for me (I work it part time now) when I graduate , but that $$ will go to my truck, right now I have about $700 in parts (edelbrock kit was $565) so I got about another $1500-$2000 to spend, tips or answers to any of those questions would be great, thanks guys (it's a 91 RS 305)

Re: TBI to carb swap
Scratch that, it WILL be with a 350, I'm just gonna take a stock 350 TBI and put the intake manifold/carb/cam/lifter kit on it, and not buy a stroker kit (doesnt fit the budget, unfortunately) but I think I'll be happy if I get some head work done, remove all emmisions (except cat.), 3.42 posi, full manual 700r4 with b&m shifter, heddman shortys with matching y-pipe and full exhaust, but I could still use some tips from anyone who has done anything similar

Re: TBI to carb swap
what kind of heads are you going with I am doing almost the exact same build check out my thread "need a little help!!!" over in Engine Swap
I used upgraded vortecs, eldelbrock performer rpm intake, and comp cams xe268h camshaft, 40 over 350 short block, flat top pistons, rebuilt rods with arp studs and wavelock bolts and looking for a good carb. so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Re: TBI to carb swap
Well the carb Using comes in a kit, for $560 you get a performer intake manifold, a cam 277/288 dur. 420/442 lift, a performer series carb 600 or 750 cfm and lifters, I saw it in a jegs catalog, I like edelbrock products, that's why I'm going with this kit but i don't know too much about carbs, and don't you need a vortec specific intake for vortec heads? And unless I can find a cheap rotating assembly, the crank rods and pistons will stay stock, unfortunately, but if I go any bigger with the engine I'll want a better carb and cam so a stock 350 would be great for me, also ill be porting the heads to get as much a I can out of them

Re: TBI to carb swap
yes the intake has to be and I did get a vortec intake it came in the kit that i got from scroggin dickey: .525 upgraded vortec heads, vortec intake, gaskets, self aligning rocker arms, all nuts and bolts, for $1,145 but once again my setup is 40 over. I don't know how many horses I am getting close to but I hope it's over 300. Good luck with your build. maybe someone else will chime in and give a little insight.

Re: TBI to carb swap
You should be getting well over 300 hp, I've heard some bad reviews of using the vortec but I think they are the best when you don't have an unlimited budget, sounds like you'll be having a nice engine

Re: TBI to carb swap
Engine and carb wise, no, that probably won't be until this summer but I will make build thread, I did pick up a posi and just got a shift kit to make my transmission fill manual so I don't have to worry about a computer for that

Re: TBI to carb swap
Sounds like you're further ahead than me, I'm still out of work and only have my night job right now, so basically I don't have money for parts right now, so for now in just getting the engine ripped apart and when I get the money I'll send it to the machine shop, from there I'll work my way up part by part and of course I will take a lot of pictures, this will be a long and drawn out build unless I get my job back soon

Re: TBI to carb swap
Yea it's unfortunate but at least I have another job that gets me by, I break even every month so I don't have to cut back I just can't spend extra, the good thing is I just got offered a full time position at another company that I'll be getting better pay at, so I guess it's a good thing, good luck to you too

Re: TBI to carb swap
Don't forget about the distibutor. It sound like your not going to be using the computer to control the engine so a HEI set up should be neaded if you don't
already have that.
already have that.

Re: TBI to carb swap
Yup I know I'll need a vaccuum advance HEI, thank you tho, and certain brand or things I should look for when buying a distributor? Something that changed about them between the older sbc's and a '95 sbc?
