Carb adapter question

I've been running my car now with q-jet on top with an edelbrock rpm intake designed for a holley carb. I had a holley 750 with mechanical secondaries on top of car but was noticing alot of fuel issues and in the 1/4 mile the fastest i could ever get was 13.13 at 103 mph. I fought with that carb for months throwing every jet i could at it and swapped the power valve, and never was there any gain. I thought this was far off and could feel fuel issues so i switched to an adapter plate, and put on a q-jet that i had.

First run at the track with the q-jet and adapter plate and i ran a 12.67 @ 106 mph. After a little more engine tuning i got my fastest time now at 12.28 @ 109.45 mph.

I'm almost positive the holley i bought was junk as i bought it used. Since my q-jet with an adapter is running great it had me leery on the purchase of a holley carb. Now to my question... Is the q-jet with an adapter plate holding some power back from my car? Is the adapter a restriction? And if it is, then would a correctly tuned, and in decent shape holley increase my 1/4 mile times?

More info on my car is in my signature, thanks.

Probably a little, but not much. The main issue is getting the secondaries opened up as quickly as possible without bog.

A double pumper will get the secondaries opened up immediately, and as long as you have sufficient stall to let the engine get into the powerband from the hit, and the carb is properly tuned, it won't bog.

If you do consider a double pumper, I'd suggest you look at the new offerings from Holley (like the HP series) or Quick Fuel Technologies. I'm seeing more and more QFT carbs at the track these days, and people love 'em.
