idle problem

hey guys

so i recently rebuilt my carb bought the kit did the Gaskets and junk then sent it out to a shop my buddy owns that was able to do the solenoids and lower body (throttle went bad) so after putting it back in i noticed the car handles a lot better and no more sticking throttle. but now i also seem to have a nasty vacuum leak, i also noticed it sputters too when at idle at a stop light or when in park. but more over i constantly have to adjust the idle. one day it will be at 500 or 400 RPM (very low) adjust to 600-700 RPM and set for the day, in another day it will jump from the cushy idle i set to 1,000 RPM! so im always driving with a wrench. i don't know what to do any more so i really need the help!

on a side note to i also notice my Check Engine Light come on occasionally while driving only to go off a few seconds to a minuet later. i don't know whats causing it but any ideas truly do help

thanks!!

Retrieve the trouble code(s) being set to at least find out what the computer thinks the problem is.

If you have a nasty vacuum leak, that needs to be fixed before you can expect the car to run correctly.

yeah, i asked at my neighborhood auto parts store and the immediately called lout the O2 sensor, i took it out the whole thing was covered completely in soot, really bad too. so i put the new one in and kept the old one. but the light still comes on. as for the vacuum leak, i have a feeling i know what it is now and will get on it, but i still need help with that light

It isn't unusual for the O2 sensor to be covered with soot.

A vacuum leak can cause an O2 sensor error code. Get the leak fixed, see what happens.
