770 truck avenger
770 truck avenger
Hi guys I've been looking around this forum and others and can't find much info on this. I bought a 770 truck avenger off kijiji that looked in pretty good condition. That was before I got a book on holleys and read through it. Now I'm wondering whether this carb will do for a street car. I can't really judge right now because it's on a thrown together 305 until I get my 350 built. The one thing I notice about it is that it only has one set of air bleeds on the secondaries. It should have 2 sets right? I was just looking for your guys opinion on this carb and if I should trade it for a dp.

From the pictures on Holley's website, it appears it only has secondary idle air bleeds. I'm not sure how they get away without secondary high speed air bleeds.
It certainly is too big for a 305, but you can probably fuss with the tuning to get it to run okay.
Depending upon your intended use once you get the 350 in, you may want to go with a more typical double pumper. If you can live without a choke, the HP series is pretty good from a performance standpoint.

Re: 770 truck avenger
Thanks for taking a look. I think I will trade it off once I get the new motor broken in. 12 miles to the imp gallon with the 305 just doesn't cut it lol. One thing I found interesting was the factory jetting and pv selection 74 primary and 99 secondary with a 2.5 pv. Would it be a good call to reject it to the street avenger specs as a starting point?
Re: 770 truck avenger
Whenever you get a used carb it's always a good idea to rejet it back to stock (taking notes on the calibration you got it with- the previous owner MAY have figured something out that worked well). Clean it all out and put fresh gaskets on while you're in there- at least the metering block and float bowl gaskets on a Holley-style.
I wouldn't jet it to the Street Avenger specs, though. The Truck Avengers have significant differences from the Street series including the bleeds and metering blocks. So I wouldn't assume the Street calibration is going to give you the same results on the Truck version of the carb. Start with what is stock for that particular model of carb and go from there.
