hard hot start, white smoke smells like gas

I have an 84 Z28 with a non CC quadrajet. It starts fine in the morning, tap the key and it fires and there's no smoke at all. If I drive it and let it sit for more than 10 minutes then it will not start unless the pedal is to the floor. A lot of white smoke comes out of the tailpipes when it does fire up. I am not losing any coolant or oil. Any help is appreciated.

You say you have a non-CC q-jet. Do you have a non-CC distributor?

If you don't have a non-CC distributor, you need to get one installed before much else is going to help.

If you have a non-CC distributor, did you set the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected? Where did you set the timing?

Is the choke working properly?

About the only thing left is the possibility of the well plugs on the bottom of the main body leaking. That's a pretty common q-jet problem.

I am using a mechanical advance distributor, non CC controlled because it was given to me. choke is working properly as far as I can tell. Would I be able to see these leaking from the top of the carb?

No, the well plugs are between the main body and throttle plate, but open directly to the intake plenum. If the leaking is bad enough, they will drain the fuel bowl into the plenum when the engine isn't running.

You didn't mention tapping the accelerator before starting it up cold - that's the normal carb start procedure to set the choke. Are you doing that?

Re: hard hot start, white smoke smells like gas

In the morning I do that, pedal to the floor then slowly release. I've tried that when starting it hot and it doesn't help. Another guy on a different forum mentioned the float being too high or stuck or there could be gunk in the needle/seat
