Cash/Air Mixture is too Rich
Hello again guys..... My 1984 Z28 was behaving badly again. For those of you that don't know, this is the 305 H.O. that I recently "Treated" myself to following my deployment to Afghanistan. I bought this on Ebay with only pictures to give me a feel for it. BIG MISTAKE!
I was driving it the other day after an extensive tune up, New Alternator, and Fuel pump, and MAP sensor when the car started to bog. Finally, it died and I coasted in to a parking lot (Pawn Shop). I opened the hood to find that gas had spilled all over my intake and was dripping from the Carb. WTF! I tapped on the carb, but no help. Do you guys think that I should Replace this Carb? Is it hard to rebuild a CCC Quad? I've never attempted it before. The suggestion was made that I go to O'Rielly's and get a remanufactured Carb since they have a lifetime guarantee. You know, That's some serious cash. I'm visiting my dad Who has Alzheimer's Disease and can't remember how to work on cars. I have NO experience rebuilding quads. He lives 500 Miles away from my home. I want this car to be able to make the journey. I have the Dough, but I don't want to spend it. Currently the car is sitting at a repair shop. They can't get to it until tuesday and i had to beg for them to even accept a car with a carburetor. Do quads normally do this when they get old? Do you think that the new and healthier stock replacement mechanical fuel pump was too much for the worn out carb?

don't have much experience with quadrajets, but two things come to mind. is gas leaking from fuel inlet? maybe fuel line leaking, should be easy fix. or float came loose and needle valve not seating, allowing fuel to overflow fuel bowl. had someone tell me that can happen. this would require removing top of carb. whatever it is, DON'T DRIVE !!!!!!!!
i lost a 1962 corvette because of a fuel leak while driving it. it's amazing how fast fiberglass
burns. good luck. BTW, if you decide to replace it, make sure you get a computer controlled carb, if that's what you have. thanks for your service in Afganistan!

Sounds like it got clogged up. I had my Qjet rebuilt by Cliff Ruggles at Cliffs High Performance in Ohio. He does fantastic work. If you have the time, I'd buy a book on rebuilding the carb and just spend a weekend tearing it apart and putting it back together step by step. or, send it off, this time of year should see a good turn around time.
My first suggestion though, is do a search on this site for your problem, then hit the internet. I've spent hours and hours reading posts here, from broken stuff to fixes. It's helped immensly because like you, I didn't know anything about qJETS before I joined this web site.
You'll want to get a dwell meter. Also, does your carb "click" when you turn the ignition to "on" without starting the car? It's supposed to. If it doesn't, you've got an issue there.
has there been anything else done to the car to modify it in anyway or is this a bone stock 84 Z28?

Re: Cash/Air Mixture is too Rich
I decided that it was worth the piece of mind to replace the carb with a Reman from O'Rielly's. Since i'm not at home and I have to drive the car 500 miles to get home, I needed a dependable quick solution. The carb is now installed, but it surges. I've done some research and determined that it probably needs mixture tuning. I'll attempt that tomorrow. I'm going to drive down to the parts store and get a vacuum tester to tune the carb. I'm really open to any other suggestions that anyone might have. Right now the car runs fine when i'm accelerating, but as soon as I let off the pedal, it kinda bucks. when it idles, it surges. New reman shouldn't do that. Probably something simple like the mixture. the old carb idled nicely before it started dumping gas on my intake. Am I on the right track here?

As far as I can tell, It's bone stock. The old Q-Jet looked VERY dirty. One of the first things that I did before the carb started to act up was to replace the fuel pump and fuel lines. I was curious, so i unscrewed the part of the carb that houses the filter. The only thing in there was a Spring. That's right, NO FILTER! I took care of that immediately!

if you do a search for posts, myself, Naf and Aperion went on for about 47 posts on how to tune my Qjet. That should help you out.
