Re: 84 Camaro z28

Hey! that could be a few different things, start with the basics! make sure the plugs and plug wires are good, carb or TPI is in tune, but it very well could be the starter. my advice would be better safe then sorry! changing a starter motor can be done with a lift or by any shop. its relatively cheap compared to getting a tow! if and when you do change the starter get a gear reduction model, they are smaller and sit back farther from the headers keeping them cooler prolonging the life of it

Having to give it gas to get the car to start is nothing related to the starter..Is it a carbed motor with a mechanical fuel pump?

Re: 84 Camaro z28

my 84 z28 did the same thing, try pumping the pedal to the floor quickly three times then starting it, should fire right up. its normal for a carb'd engine to do that, even the best tuned carb will always start hard, especially in cold weather or at night. if it still has the q-jet check the plugs regularly to make sure they aren't black, from what i gather running rich is a cc q-jet problem

I love starting my T/A because of this. Later this year I'll be explaing the differences between that and a modern FI car to my daughter as she gets closer to getting her permit. When I turn the key in the FI car I feel like I'm missing out on something.

i just wish i could take the time and spend the money to really rebuild mine correctly. i have factory service manuals on them thanks to ebay, and a dwell meter, and a multimeter, and a set of the smallest drill bits screwdrivers and Allen wrenches needed lol
