choke heater problems
choke heater problems
so heres the problem i was driving home the other night when i had a large flash inside my car when a fuse popped and my choke light came on. i knew it was a fuse that popped. i checked it the next morning and it was my choke heater fuse tha popped. i went to repleace the fuse and as soon as i did the fuse popped again. and now my car is running at extremely high rpms and will not return to a normal idle. does anybody know what could be wrong and what i can do to fix it. i have a 1983 trans am 305 with a carb.

Re: choke heater problems
Look at the choke heater wire; blue, plugs into the choke on the side of the carb. Follow it back into the loom that protects the whole harness. Make sure it's not shorted to ground somewhere.
If that's OK, get a handful of fuses; unplug the choke heater; replace the fuse; see if it stays working. If it does, the choke heater is bad. (never seen that happen, can't imagine how it could be possible, but check it anyway) If it still pops, it's something to do with the alternator.
Replace it again, unplug the alt connector, and see if the fuse holds. If it does, then the problem is related to the alt. Check the BIG RED wire from the alternator to the battery, make sure it's WELL connected both at the post on the back of the alt and at the end where it goes to the batt. If it's OK, then you need a new alt.
