750 do too much?

I have been looking at this forum for quite sometime now. I got my 1987 formula about a year ago. It has a 350 out of a 1983 heavy duty truck casting number 207. it's a four bolt main motor With a edelbrock performer Intake, Headers with single exhaust thrush. Also has MSD super coil and cap and rotor and wires. I am also running a brand new Holley 750 dp with mech secondaries. I am wondering if this carb is too much for my setup. it's running quite rich it seems like but it runs excellent through all driving speeds and rpms. I get a cloud of smoke when I start it(maybe pumping gas too much...two pumps on first start of the day. don't use the manual choke) but anyways, everybody tells me it's WAY too much carb for my motor. was just wondering if its true and if I should just rebuild the Holley 600 4bbl that I took off and put it back on. this winter I will be getting a edelbrock performer cam and lifters installed so u would like to take that into account too. thanks And I will post pics soon!

On that combo, sure, a 750dp "can" work....getting the tune right is going to be a headache....
A 650, or even a 600 is better suited and will run better out of he box.
So why the perormer cam? Why not try and do a head/cam/intake deal instead of the money your about to spend to be dissapointed?

I'm not Quite sure of the price difference but my budget is limited. I talked to a long time mechanic With years of race car motor building and he said the performer cam would be about the biggest I could go before my bottom and would need help and would want a stall converter....

Re: 750 do too much?

you would be shocked at how low of a CFM you can use. the 750 will work ooookkkkkk on your engine but a 650 or less should do you good. here is a rough way to figure out what CFM you need. cubic inches x red line (RPM) x volumetric efficiency( use .9 as a general number) and divide by 3456. i have a holly 750 ultra double pumper on my 383 and it has 10.5-1 comp, full forged bottom end, AFR 195 heads with 2.05 int valves, comp cam with 110LSA 242/248-584/579.....list goes on but it has plenty of carb for it.

your bottom end would be ok with a bigger cam, but your heads will probably cause you to loose some of the power capabilities of a bigger cam. and dont quote me but a performer rpm cam might not need a stall conv....check the website and see for sure. but i would look into heads and cam like someone else mentioned. to do a performer kit will net you somewhere around 350hp and if you do the performer rpm kit it will net you around 400hp.

Re: 750 do too much?

My .454/.480 lift, 112 LSA cam recommends a +2400 stall but I have gotten by with the stock converter. Not that I recommend you do that. I was hurting my performance by doing that because the cam really comes in strong above 2K and the stock converter wasn't letting the motor get into that power band quickly.
