AV tension adj.

Read the info a few times and got a question. 87 firebird 305 ccc. Popped the hood and air cleaner on a dead cold motor. Barely touched the rear flap and it rocked open and closed with no tension with car not running. Does the the AV adjustment need to be made with motor at operating temp and/or with motor running? Car runs very good now when I floor it from dead stop. Just trying to learn, fine tune and get the most out of these ccc quads Thanks. Respect.

Just leave it alone if it running fine....If you don't know what you are doing with these carbs you can screw them up in a hurry. When the engine is off and cold there is nothing to stop the secondary A/V from opening. The amount of tension will vary from motor or application.

If you would like to read more about Q-jets google Lars Grimsrud or Cliff Ruggles. They both have excellent tips and advice.

Re: AV tension adj.

Correct tension for a 305 is usually about 7/8 turn. Doesn't vary very much from one 305 to another. It's simply a matter of how much air a motor moves under any given conditions, which is about 90% a function of CID, and NOTHING else.

If you think it "runs very good now", just WAIT til you set it up RIGHT. Prolly blow you away.
