Mechanical Fuel Pump Doesn't Fit?

I have an 87 LG4. I built a 383 and installed into the engine bay on top of a Spohn K-member with K-member braces (triangle that bolts to the k-member and the subframe). When I tried to install an Edelbrock Mechanical fuel pump, the pump hits on the k-member brace. I can't rotate the ports on the pump in any way to get it to work. The pump gets real close to fitting, to the point where I can bolt it up but its touching the brace. My concern is that if I hit a bump or something, I will break the pumps housing. Has anyone else ever run into this? Did I do something really stupid like putting the motor mounts on backwards or something? What do you guys think?

Pictures of your problem would help. Is the diameter of the aftermarket fuel pump larger than a stock setup.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Doesn't Fit?

I don't have the stock pump anymore. I also put a fuel pump block-off plate on the engine and started going the external electric pump route. Electric seemed like a better idea at the time. I'm still working on that, but if I could jut slap the mechanical pump back on somehow, that would be preferrable.

The problem is actually the depth of the pump. The Edelbrock extends further down toward the ground than the stock pump.

Yes the aftermarket pump is bigger than the stock plus the fittings stick out further since the pump doesn't come with reverse flare fittings already installed. They are pipe threads so that you can choose what type of fitting you want to use.

I installed a Holley 110gph mechanical pump on my LG4 and I had to rotate the bottom a little so that the one line is pointing straight forward and the other is pointed towards the front passenger corner. I have -6 AN fittings on mine as well.

The housing is close but not touching and it won't touch when the motor rocks a little when I rev it. I can get a picture of it tonight and post it if you like.

I had the same problem. You will need to take off the bottom and rotate it so it will clear. Just make sure you use a torque wrench and tighten to factory specs or you will ruin the diaphragm.
