I just bought a 1984 Z28 that has a 305 H.O. Engine in it. It has trouble starting and when I do get it to run it floods itself to death.

I think it's the original 4 bbl carb on it too. I was just wondering what the steps were to clean out the carb?

It has sat for awhile and when I work the throttle the carburetor does feel sticky.

Sounds like a complete rebuild is in order. NAPA and other's offer 'Jiffy Kits' that contain all the gaskets, needle/seat, etc. and adjustment specs.

The key is to get it VERY CLEAN - inside and out. There are tiny metering passages/holes in the body that must be fully open and 'whistle clean'. Simply soaking the parts in rattle can carb cleaner will NOT do the trick. There are 1-5 gallon buckets of Carb specific cleaner for this and the parts are submerged in it overnight. Then rinsed in gasoline and blown dry with air.

I got a rebuild kit, took it apart and cleaned the hell out of it. Put it all back together with all the new parts and stuck it back on the car. it tries to start but won't. I mean it will run for about 2 seconds and die. The carburetor was nasty inside. Rust, bits of leaves, dirt.....
It's getting gas but Idk.

I'm beginning to think the distributor needs to be adjusted. It may have been adjusted before I got it ( project car someone was working on but personal problems halted the progression).

I'll update again soon.

is the choke closing? will it run longer if you give it some throttle?
