i have a 85, 305 with the rochester quad, no computer, and computer related all torn out, its in a 89 firebird with fuel press regulated, fuel pressure at 5psi (in line press gauge) I got the carb from summit racing, friend gets great discounts, put the carb on, adjust the fuel pressure, will start and run, but won't idle too great, and put into gear it dies, the electric choke is working, but to restart it after it dies, i have to pump the gas pedal while cranking it!??! No vacuum leaks, brand new complete secondary ignition, dist, plugs, wires ,cap ,rotor, coil.....if i hold the rpm around 900, it runs great? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

is it flooding it at an idle or no fuel?
Te pressure gauge (about 6inches) from carb inlet stays a 5psi. I haven't had anybody to look into the card while i was cranking it after it stalls out? So I'm guessing its getting fuel if the gauge stays a 5psi? Its a rebuilt carb from summit, so i assume it wouldn't need much adjustment?

Foolish unless the guy from summit built and tested it on your car.Originally Posted by weesel72

What is your base timing?

Thanks No, i have not. How exactly do you go about doing that, meaning, is there a "special" way or something? Like i said, not too good with carbs! Is that the adjustment on the choke side, or the one on the linkage side?

Without knowing exactly which one you bought there still should be a screw with a spring under it near the throttle linkage. Turn that in until you get to your desired idle then use the idle mixture screws to fine tune it.Originally Posted by weesel72

If you don't mind, check back on this thread sometime, in case i have questions. Again, thanks!!

I agree I would check the idle speed screw, I don't know what carb model you have but if you give it too much on the Idle speed screw just to keep it alive because of other issues it will start to turn on the primary side and be dog rich at an idle.. usually if you have a lumpy cam and don't have it adjusted people will keep going with the screw to stay alive and they run super rich at an idle
