1987 LG4 Trans AM fuel pumps location question

Hi I have an 87 Trans Am, I am having a low fuel pressure issue and want to go about replacing my fuel pumps. I know my LG4 has a mechanical pump on the block and also an electric pump. My question/concern is the electric pump I have is inline just outside the fuel tank. It almost looks like a fuel filter with power going to it. Is this stock or should there be a pump in the tank?

Thanks

That is what I am suspecting. I just got the car and hear something clunking in the rear and I think there may be an old pump still in the tank and the inline one was a "quick" fix. This may be the reason I am having fuel restriction issues.

Can anyone else confirm this?

That's probably going to have to you.

I'd troubleshoot the electrical before dropping the tank. The fuel pump relay should be on the firewall near the booster. I'd start by jumping it to see if you can get the in-tank pump to spew some fuel. Go from there.

Agreed. That's probably what the previous owner tried to do to "crutch" the situation without actually FIXING it.

Re: 1987 LG4 Trans AM fuel pumps location question

Ditto the above. My 84 had this in-tank pump and it didn't work though the mechanical pump on the motor pulled enough to pull through the dead one in the tank. When I pulled the one in the tank and removed the mechanical pump altogether, I went with a 255lph pump in the tank and ran a fuel pressure regulator.
