Crossfire intake to carburetor swap.

The car is a 1983 Trans Am with the original 305 and a 700r4 out of a 89 Firebird formula. I am not a fan of the crossfire intake and would like to have a carburetor. What would I need to purchase aside from a new carburetor and a intake manifold. I am confident in my mechanical abilities so any modifications won't be a big deal. It is also my daily driver at the moment so how long would a swap take on average.

Re: Crossfire intake to carburetor swap.

Intake, carb, large cap, coil in cap HEI dist. One of the cheap summit racing brands for $90, skip white $60 one, and IIRC the crossfire used an intake elec fuel pump. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). If it does have an elec fuel pump you will need the Mallory $100 adjustable fuel pressure reg.

If you have the 700r4 You will also need the TV cable adpater and bracket for a carb.

The total swap is pretty simple and shouldn't take you more than an afternoon. Maybe 3-4 hours for a 1st timer. Being it's a DD I always recommend doing work like this on days off work or school. Like a sat. That away in case any probs do come up you got 2 full days to fix it.

Re: Crossfire intake to carburetor swap.

Okay that doesn't sound bad at all. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the TV cable also called a kickdown cable?

Any suggestions for a good carb that would be in the $350-450 price range?

I believe the car has a mechanical fuel pump. I haven't been under it lately because it's raining where I am and the top down visibility is limited.

And why is a new distributor needed? I'm relatively new to electrical components.

In the case of the 700R4 it is not a kickdown cable.

Essentially, it is used to vary the transmission's mainline fluid pressure with throttle opening.

Re: Crossfire intake to carburetor swap.

The 700r4 and 200 4r uses a throttle valve cable (TV cable) which controls line pressure in the trans.

The kickdown or detent cable cable on th-350 only connects to the detent valve and only really controls the detent or kickdown or "passing gear" as some calls it.

The EFI systems uses a computer control for the timing that's interfaced with the distributor. No mech. advance system in it as the computer advances the timing. When you dump the EFI system you need a non computer controlled distributor.

You need a 600 cfm carb. For street and mild street/strip I like the edelbrock carbs like a 1406. Holley 4160 or 4150 style 600 cfm elec choke carb would be great too.
