84 camaro project new to carbs
okay so I just picked up a 84 305 camaro stock carb stock dizzy, AIR delete and egr. we can get it to start fairly easy doesn't idle well (have to hold it at about 1500 rpm) and will drive but wont accelerate. We just found out that the dizzy advance wasn't hooked up so we connected that went for a drive and same thing but this time it over heated when we got back, also it sounds like there is a miss when you give it any sort of gas. I am use to fuel injected but computer controlled carb is confusing as all hell, so I suppose first off what all sensor are on this that would effect drive ability (the trans to it is acting up)?

First try the obvious, give it a full tune up. After that find someone that knows how to properly tune the cc-qjet. If the issue still continues then the carb might not be an issue. Also might check your timing. Other than that I don't know what direction to go.

Re: 84 camaro project new to carbs
Best way to check proper operation is to connect a scanner to it while it runs, see what the ecm sees.
TPS is in the carb, 3 wire connector. Should read around 0.4 at idle and around 4.0 at WOT with the connector plugged in and top and middle wire backprobed. Again a scanner will show this. I use an autoxray 6000. Much less expensive today than when I bought mine.

Re: 84 camaro project new to carbs
I tested the tps and it showed good but how do I test the vaccum sensor it hold vaccum but I don't know what wire to prob to check for voltage or what I should see for voltage with volt meter

Re: 84 camaro project new to carbs
okay so the vac sensor did have a 5v supply and when vaccum was applied it did put out voltage you to about 4.8. I also did remember that when we were messing with the starter we had to unplug the knock sensor so I plugged that back in there is also a smaller similar connection that I have no idea what it goes to (green single wire). tested it and same thing will start really easy won't idle and when given gas doesn't matter how much pedal will not wrap up. also anyone got info on how to use the moats reader to actively see the sensors?

Re: 84 camaro project new to carbs
provided the ignition system is good-meaning new cap/rotor/plugs/wires and sometimes distributor-it should be able to idle WITHOUT the ecm controlling anything. IOW a bad sensor somewhere is not preventing it from idling.
replace all of that ignition stuff with new and examine carefully the condition of your distributor if you don't go ahead and replace it while you're there.
if, after all of that's good and it still won't idle, time to open the carburetor.

Re: 84 camaro project new to carbs
okay so went through the ignition system even took the ICM out and had it tested and it will almost idle but it did seem to be bein effected by the ecm because it would change rpm and sometimes shake and other times not but I got it to idle a bit so now I think I might be able to time it. I wonder if the base timing is set to advanced right now so when the ecu tries to advance it goes to much can't hear knocking but the friggen thing is so loud due to the exhaust being cut

disconnect the four wire connector to the distributor. should be laying in the harness a few inches from the dist base.
