tpi to carb wiring

I'm trying to find some good info on what I need to do with the wiring on my sons car. He's putting a carbed motor in place if the tpi 305. Can we eliminate the ecm and all of the wires going to it ? I have been searching for a good thread on this but I haven't really found one.
Thanks

Re: tpi to carb wiring

That makes it an easy swap for you. The ECM harness used for the TPI is separate from the wiring needed to run the Engine itself. Start at the ECM, remove it from the car and pull the ECM plugs/wiring thru the body/fender-well and into the engine bay. Then disconnect every TPI sensor/injector / relay. Keeping the entire ECM harness intact is easy and there really is no need to cut anything. The hardest wires to deal with is the ground wires bolted the back of each head, and that's a tough spot to access in every Thirdgen !

Retain ALL the wires on the drivers side of the Firewall. That's where the Engine harness and Headlight harness connect. When converting to carb you will need to replace the plug and maybe add some wire to the oil pressure wire,..... and you will (probably ) need to add a switched power wire for the carbs electric choke. 2 wires; that's BASICALLY all you'll need to deal with when converting an 86 TPI to carb.

FYI; By removing the ECM you will lose auto tranny TCC lock-up. There are many threads here on TGO that cover this topic in detail.

Yeah we just did it too. This explanation is on point.

We ended up just cutting all the ECM wires and yanking it all out of there. what a mess.

You also have to use a mechanical advance distributor also. Worked fine.

Also, the bracket for the TV linkage and cable linkage we used was this:

Just take the tab off if you go with an edelbrock like we did. worked like a charm.

And dont forget the geometry corrector if you have an autoomatic.

Also you will need a new TV cable

Throttle cable might work but we just got a shorter one.

A TBI cable will work fine.

Check out My build in the Engine swap section We had INCREDIBLE results with a 97 vortec swap with a RPM style intake and 600 CFM edelbrock.... might as well yank that engine out if it is stock
