tbi to carb swap what do i need

Ive been doing alot of research and reading on the swap so ive got a decent idea on what to do and get but im just looking to get some good pointers and sugestions on what to do...i bought a 89 iroc roller years ago (no motor and tranny) and i ended up finding a 350 with a 5 speed to put in it so i did a drove it for a few years and im geting tired of the low power and troubles ive been having with electrical so i found a set of 906 vortec heads and i think once i pull the motor out to freshen it up ill put a cam in it aswell dunno what yet looking at lunati or comp thumpr...anyway im about to pull the motor out soon...once i do i know ill have to put a fuel regulator, buy a vortec intake, a carb and a distributor...any pointers or advice would be great since this im kind of a newbie when it comes to carb stuff

Thanks!!

What's wrong with your tbi setup? A few months ago I finished my tbi to carb swap, did the swap bc my tbi setup was non functioning and the wiring was a nightmare. Was easy enough, I swapped intakes, popped in a hei and threw a quadrajet on top. I took my electric fuel pump out and just went mechanical. Works for me.

Im having the same trouble as you....wiring is a mess and im having alot of problems one after the other.....plus its alot cheaper once i want to make lots of power with a carb than fuel injection

Re: tbi to carb swap what do i need

I got sick of throwing components at my TBI setup, unlike OBD2 codes the codes my old system put out were more like suggestions and guesses, after replacing all sensors and ECM, and the TBI it just never worked right EVER! I sank 3 times what it cost to convert to a carb trying to fix it and let me tell ya that made the car enemy #1 with the wife and I almost had to sell it. I put an edelbrock performer manifold on mine, got a holley 770 carb that I'm still tinkering with cuz it was free to me, and old style GM HEI distributor, despite tinkering with the carb still I had the thing running and it by golly sounds damn mean now, the engine runs perky and sounds like a whole different animal ! big improvement over the TBI when it would run.

Re: tbi to carb swap what do i need

I just finished dropping in a 350 in my 85 zc8. It already had a carb, but I removed all of the electronics - the wire harness that runs through the passagener kick panel. No issues with losing that harness. I did have to run a single wire for my back up lights, but that was easy enough to add in. You should have an easy time making the switch. There are some very helpful articles on here. Good luck. any question ask - great answers here and great knowledge. *****

Converting from TBI is as simple as:
Fuel Pressure Regulator (with return otherwise you'll burn up the fuel pump).
Carbed intake, anything dual plane will do you good although I'm a fan of the RPM air gap when I buy a dual plane.
Carb... anything in the 600cfm range, vacuum secondaries.
Throttle/TV cable bracket.

I wouldn't suggest removing the harness completely. I'd trim out what isn't needed. (This way you can retain factory gauges). Off the top of my head, I don't remember when GM did this but if you remove the oil pressure sensor wiring on some vehicles, the fuel pump will not turn on and you will have to jump out the wiring to get it to work.
