Choke operation
Just wanting to say hello to everyone. I don't think I have ever introduced myself to a forum before, but my internet username has been mjoekingz28 for about 15-20 years- so this is kind of special.
My first car was a carbureted RX-7 (1985) and during warm-ups in cool weather I would pull out the choke **** and have it tuned to hold the rpms to run just so, before leaving the driveway.
My third car was a 97 Z28 6spd LT1.
I always wanted a third gen, since like 1990, but somehow ended up with a 4th gen my senior year in high school.
Now I am becoming interested in trying to actually own a 3rd gen. I have driven one a time or two.
Anyways.......
How does the choke operations for the 305s work, both L69 and LG4.....the four barrel ones?
Thanks,
Joseph

Re: Choke operation
electric choke. 12v from the alternator is passed through the choke coil which slowly warms it and expands it causing the choke to open. power comes from the alternator circuit so that the choke only receives power when the engine is running. choke can be adjusted but should be full open within a few minutes of running, depending on adjustment and ambient temp.

Re: Choke operation
So, no pumping the pedal.........can you explain what that did anyway..............all I know is if it is flooded you were supposed to hold it floored to clear the flood.
So drive it like a EFI? Is that what electric choke practically means?
Appreciate the response!

Re: Choke operation
perhaps a more detailed description of the choke operation
the choke linkage is engaged on a cold engine by pressing the throttle once
the throttle also engages the carb's booster shot which pumps a small amount of fuel into the manifold. somtimes more than one pump is needed to add enough fuel, but only one to engage the choke
the choke is also equipped with a vacuum pull-off which cracks the choke plate open slightly once engine manifold vacuum is applied (from a running engine) and the choke no longer needs to be closed completely to start the motor.
what information are you looking for? thirdgen carb motors (at least us models) were equipped with a computer controlled carb. i would recommend gaining a thorough knowledge of these systems before purchasing one of these models with the intent of retaining the computer controlled system (which is separate from the electric choke).

Re: Choke operation
I dont know exactly! Maybe a new thread is in order. There are many I like, but I think are perfect to me. I know the two I drove that I had a blast driving- I just think they were 305s.
Looking around ebay I saw the dual snorkel intake setup and thought that wuld be a great street set-up. I doubt I would ever try for low ETs on the strip or turning a low lap time on a road course- so I want street only. Then, I dont want to run around looking for mod after mod to get faster. I did that with my 97 LT1 and hated it. I want factory! If the factory made an updated or a fix to a problem, as a recall or whatever, I just want factory STOCK. I want to be able to run the car without killing it or left wanting it to be faster.
I realize there is a place for a streetcar on the street and a trackcar on the track and I would rather not blur that line.
So, a good street performer that can exit corners with a little Lateral G force would be great. Maybe a 0-60mph run from time to time. Maybe a jaunt down the interstate from time to time. Responsible performance. Not flying down residential streets making noise and danger. Not doing donuts in the parking lot. But I do admit that laying down TWO tread marks a few yards long would be juvenille fun a time or two every set of tires.
That said, and thank you for inquiring.
I wanted manual steering but apparently this wasnt available from the factory. I like cable clutch, I see from the main page that 82 and 83 were the years for that. i want crank windows and manual locks(if any at all). I want carburetor. I want a hardtop. I do not want air conditioning. As already mentioned, the absence of a peg leg would be cool. Other than that I dont know much more.
I have seen a few nice ones (mostly Ohio) on ebay from time to time. Admittedly, I thought Van Nuys made em all when I started studying up. But they were more or less the IROC era. I dont like Berlinettas either.

Re: Choke operation
The only mods I plan to ever do to the car is maybe an exhaust that rumbles. Other than that, factory stock would be optimal. Even, AC filters and belt. I can't stand red paint anymore.
Ive owned a :
Red Z28
Red Sunbird
red rx-7
Red Dodge dakota
Check out the blue 86 on eBay. Besides the weird pipes it is almost just to my liking.
I think I would prefer dual snorkel, but as already stated it would be a street only car. Was manual steering ever offered from the Ohio plant?
Also, it would be a fair weather car.........maybe some cold rain by accident. But, probably a two oil change a year type driver.

Re: Choke operation
L69 (5.0 HO) is closest to what you describe. With the T5 and 3.73 rear end. It had the larger factory exhaust, close ratio 5 speed and dual snorkel air cleaner. The 305 was only rated at 190 HP but can easily be swapped for a later model 350 keeping all the other stock systems in place.

Re: Choke operation
I sure had fun for the 5 or so miles I drove a 5spd 305 3rd gen. It was more fun than a LT1 T56. It was engaging if I remember right. Not putting up low wuarter mile times or anything, but just a fun streetcar.
That LT1 was a sickness for me. Sure I had some fun, but I spent thousands trying to make it accelerate faster. I even almost dropped a thousand dollars to grt ZR1 wheels.
Now, the third gen, as I have said, I was fond of since a very young age. It is cool how they still look 'up-to-date' now and can be sporting an antique tag.
I am kind of a minimalist or purist. I prefer simplistic quality, which contradicts the way the automobile is going now-a-day.
Thanks for the information from the site. I have a 6.0 LQ4 2500 NV4500 Silverado I need to get out of the shop. Besides it having a DBW throttle- it is the best truck in the world to me. True dual Flowmasters with small 2" outpipes and a CD player are all that I think is done to it. Maybe the electric throttle wont be so bad!
Ever since I had that LT1 I have been getting into thinking factory/stock is best. If you want more power, then buy the next faster car-which is easier today than it was last century. Today 600+hp cars come factory. Last century, 1/2 that was the talk of the town.
Anyway, on tht 97 Z28 I had, I tried it all- hypertech, 160 thermostat, cold air K&N, centerforce dual clutch, flows, dynamax, $600 Borla exhaust, short shifters, hypertech air foil, free mods....it just made the car worse. Now I know, factory pretty much cant be beat. Now I focus on fresh fluids and filters and keeping it clean and using quality replacement parts. I do love a good sound system tho, and having that and maybe a rumble from a V8's exhaust is about all the mods I care for.
Do check out that blue 86 from Miami, FL on eBay. That car is about perfect for/to me. Although, I would probably double that mileage in a few months. I am not a collector or a bone stock kind of guy on all my cars- but I am quite close. And seeing how that blue 86 already had exhaust work, if ai got it, wouldnt be destroying the way it rolled off the line in Ohio like some collectors and purists would dislike.
But as long as I have one vehicle the way I like- good sound system and a good flowing intake/exhaust, could have a peach I kept garaged that could stay cherry and unmodified.
The Cobalt I am driving now is stock. The radio is just fine from the factory. It sounds good to me, and I love the dual **** (tuner and volume) control that you cannot seem to find in the aftermarket. If the radio or speakers broke in this car I would probably go to the dealer for replacements instead of a car audio store. But, I can be like that as long as I have one ride with smooth, loud sound with a subwoofer.
It is more fun to drive slow cars fast than fast cars slow. I also know there is a place for a street car and a track car. i learned this from sportbikes, where they would put blinkers on a road race bike and sell it for street duty. Arms hurting, fueling that wont hold slow and steady speeds.....it was probably cool and novel at first, but you cant live with that. I wish we could get a racetrack built nearby so could unleash the engine on the racetrack (like in say a Z06 C5 Corvette) instead of trying to go fast on the streets in a sportscar.
I feel, now, that a 5spd 305 4bbl is about the perfect sports/muscle car for the street. You can live with it and put in some miles-which I enjoy. Some folks may like a 500hp wild ride and drive it a few miles from time to time.......and that is ok, but not me. Them old foxbodies were probably about perfect for the Ford guys. But, I do love this Cobalt. It is the nly automatic transmission I have ever not hated. It has the DOHC, but not the VTEC which I hate. So I can drive around normal or gas sip mode, or I can cane it a lil and romp around a little bit. It has enough power to be eager to move, but not so much that you cannot gas it after first gear(like them literbikes).
Anyway
Have a good one!
