Broken fuel line?
Hi there, I was trying to replace the fuel filter on my 1985 Pontiac Trans Am and the steel hardline going to the carburetor broke and sprayed fuel everywhere and now I am looking to replace it. It broke about 3 or 4 inches from the inlet to the fuel filter, I am not sure what I will need to replace it. Obviously either hardline from the pump or rubber hose to the pump. What size should I look for? I think rubber will be easier just wondering what your opinions are and what I should do in order to replace it. This 305 isn't long in my engine bay, but I want to make sure it is safe. Will the fuel line be all I need or will I need some new fittings to put on? I don't know much about the do's and do not's of fuel lines other than not by anything hot or moving. Thank you all for your advice and guidance, I really appreciate it.

Regular old rubber fuel line is fine. It's a low pressure carbed fuel system, as long as the hose is rated for gasoline and your clamps are tight enough to not leak, it couldn't be any easier.

Ahhhhh! SOS! I thought the spill had stopped but it keeps spilling out way more than what could've been in the lines. Is it the pressure in the tank? I opened the gas tank to maybe help stop the flow and I crimped the broken line. My house reeks of gas, oh well.

I've got the hardline that snapped up in elevation more than the tank, and it still is running gas onto my floor. Overnight a gallon or so made it's way onto my floor.

Re: Broken fuel line?
i had that happen on an 84 trans am years ago. i was visiting a friend at an apartment complex. looked outside after a while and noticed the fire department outside. they had my hood open and were about to shovel dirt in my engine! i stopped them and asked WTF are you doing? turns out the rubber line feeding the mechanical pump cracked and i guess the tank had pressure in it, forcing gas out slowly. but it was a huge puddle. somebody walking by called the fire department because they thought a spark might blow up the car or whatever. i cut the line and put a bolt in the end temporarily and cracked the gas cap loose. then got a new hose and made the repair.
