Hesitation Problems. I think it's the float.

Ok...I'm going crazy trying to eliminate the hesitation in my QJet. (Can't switch to another carb till it's emissions exempt.) The hesitation is only when you punch it.

The air bleed is 5/8 of a turn from the bottom. The little screw in the MCS on top of the float that looks like it has a flathead tip is 5 turns out (my shop manual said to make it 2 but it didn't change anything). Jets have not been touched and they're stock.

I've played with the float and am thinking it might be the cause. How low does it need to be and how do I adjust the thing? Do I put my finger on the metal part in the front that the needle hangs off of and push it all the way down and then measure the distance between the back of the float and the top of the backing? Or do I push it down enough to cause the needle to be seated and then measure?

I'm at a complete loss right now with this thing and any help would be very, very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

In checking the float adjustment, you need to hold both the u-shaped pivot pin and the flat of the float against the needle (gently) to hold the needle against the seat. Then measure the distance from the back of the float to the top of the float bowl.

Sounds more like you've got a secondary bog, though. That's assuming by "punch it", you mean flooring it. If that's the case, your AV is opening too quickly - that's controlled both by the choke pull-off and the AV spring tension. If the pull-off is shot (or the rod missing), it'll bog if the AV is set correctly, and not have adequate power if the AV tension is set tight enough to keep it from bogging.

Check that before giving up on the CC q-jet. I can only describe the way mine runs right now as "awesome", and it's smog-legal.

I know these under-rated CC QJets can be awesome. Just takes a little more work I guess.

I don't really mean punch it to the floor. It's actually if I just kind of tap it a little quick. If I'm facing up hill and tap it the car will 9 out of 10 times stall out.

What's the state of tune of your ignition? What's your base timing set at?

What type of air cleaner are you running?

You may have a fuel problem, but I'd check these other things first. Are you getting a nice shot from your accelerator pump?

Ignitions in good condition. Getting a good spark to all the plugs. I did figure out that the carb was running lean though. I raised the float a little and things got way better. I think I just need to raise it a touch more and it should be back to perfect order. I'm also running a K&N filter too and the accel pump is giving a good shot.

Thanks,
Matt
