air filter

hey guys.. maybe this ain't the right sopot for this... but should i be running an open filter on my carb.. i.e. the edelbrock setup.. chrome top and bottom open element in between or should i switch to the ram air box??? I have a holley 650 v.s. on 350 sbc..
your opinions are greatly appreciated... the reason i am asking is that i read about poor circulation in the motor bay and was wondering if i should be trying to get air from outside the car... in a couple of weeks i'll be getting a cowl induction hood...
thanks in advance guys!!!!:hail: :lala:

You are right about the air under the hood. The air under the hood is hot, when you really want cool air into the engine.

Since you are going with a cowl induction hood soon, I would wait until the hood is on, then make it a functional cowl induction. You may have to fabricate an air box to seal the air cleaner to the hood. Also with the cowl hood, you should be able to fit a taller air filter under it. Cool air is always better for performance. Good luck.

You dont need a spacer, get a 14x3 non dropbase setup and you should be GTG for now. Latter on when you get the cowl hood you can upgrade to a 14x5 filter element. What people dont seem to get is when you get a drop base bottem and need to space it it ends up being about the same hieght as a non drop base

Hey Bama, I was just curious, I have an identical set-up to yours, minus the headers. I was wondering what kind of times you were getting, if any.
Last year I ran a 9.6 in the 1/8th mile, no trap speed.
This year I hope to get into the 9.0 to 9.2 range just from odds and ends I've done, weight removal, adjusting .etc.

i ended w/ a 16.2 in the 1/4... wheels were spinning the whole way... instead of worrying about more power i gotta worry about more traction!!!!!!!! my 60 ft time was 2.622
