Can you adjust an electic choke so it doesn't open so fast?

My electric choke was just replaced a few months ago and it works good... maybe too good. The car idles fine at startup, but after a few blocks down the road it doesn't run well at all until the engine is operating temps. I am curious if my e-choke is opening too fast or if that is even a problem. Is there a way to adjust it so it opens slower?

Try rotating it to a richer setting. The initial opening at startup will be determined by your choke pull-off, which sounds like it's fine now. Rotating will keep the tension higher until the thermostat warms up more.

AFAIK, you cannot rotate OEM electric chokes. They are indexed to the housing. No reason you cannot take a dremel & grind off the indexing tab though. IMO, it shouldn't be necessary to mess with that.

novadude, I believe that five7kid meant the choke housing cover (the black thing ) Actually the housings came riveted from RPD once the choke was "universaly" set. What needs to be done (if not already) is drill out the rivets and install some screws in place (can't remember threads, I think 2-56?). You can rotate the cover which holds the choke "spring" (temp sensative coil) so it closes more or less depending on your climatic location.

That's all good suggestions to try FIRST. One other way to go that I have played with (never got it quite right cause I didn't have the time) was to install a resistor in the line supplying voltage to the choke element. That means the choke won't try to close any further than normal for any given temp but the electrical "heater" will take longer to warm it up. I con't remember the resistance I tried but it wasn't many Ohms.
