where do i start?

I put my motor in a few months ago and it's never seem to run right since. I believe i need to tune my carb but i dont even know where to start (what jets, rods etc) its always hard to start and it bogs off idle sometimes...pops thru the exhaust when idling, can smell gas a lot of times...and it also stalls at idle a lot. i got the carb used so i dont know if it has been changed from factory (its an edelbrok 1405 600cfm) if anyone can give some suggestions id appreciate it

First thing to do is contact Edlebrock and ask them what the original calibration was. Put it back to that FIRST then start tuning efforts from there. If that was the same carb you were using before (when the engine ran good) then you screwed something else up probably. Carbs don't go THAT far out of tune just from minor (and not so minor)engine changes.

79 Malibu "beater" w/junkyard 400 SBC, tweaked QJet 4bbl, finally a decent set of heads, a few other tricks. A maddening 13.000001 @ 108 on the motor with little traction. No nitrous runs with the new heads yet.
Grandma's old 78 Malibu (33K miles!) soon to have the powertrain from the 79 put in it.

Nah the carb came off my blazer (which im got for free) and i have no clue whats been done to it...but it did run pretty good then on the truck, i believe...so i guess it shouldnt be so whacked out...about the only thing ive messed with are the idle mixture screws...but i still think it may be a bit rich
