It looks as though I am going to have to buy a new carb. I have had Edelbrock carbs in the past and was not happy with the dependability. Should I just trade in my only computer controlled quadrajet in for a newly rebuilt mechanical one? (I have a vacuum advance dist.) The comp. controlled one on there now isn't doing so well because of the dist. I don't want to put in a 18 year old dist from the 305 in the new motor. What about the street demon or speed demon?

Either one of those will work great. I can't really say which one is "best" since I just look at a carb as a fuel mixing device and ANY carb will work great if properly tuned thoughout the entire RPM/load range. But out of the box the carbs you mentioned are probably closer to optimum than any stock Holley or QJet.
