You didn't say how many miles you have on your carb but a real problem with the Q-Jet carb is that the pri. throttle shaft bores wear out, which allows extra air in and makes it hard to get a decent idle. This can be fixed but you will have to bring the carb base to a machnist to have that done. You could buy a Q-Jet book and read it from cover to cover but the Elec. carbs still need special tools for proper set up. If you can get by without useing your car for awaile i would recommend sending it out to a rebuild shop. I think the Carb Shop went out of busniess but i am sure someone on this board can steer you in the right direction. Just my .02 !

my car has 130k miles on it.
so you think it would be better to rebuild then? I can probably do without my car for a couple of weeks so it feasibly.

Jay, if your car is a typical 80s 4bbl Camaro then the carb you have has NO direct replacement high performance unit. It is a computer controlled Quadrrajet and it's mixture is controlled by the car's ECM under most conditions. If you replace it with a typical Holley, Edlebrock, Street Demon, etc. you will cause problems you probably don't want to deal with. Your ECM will not be happy about the change and will throw a constact check engine light. Also, it will cause the ECM to run the engine is "limp home" mode which, among other things, will give you a really weak spark advance curve and the engine will generally run like crap and make no power despite the new carb.

Get a rebuilt CC Qjet. Then come back to this board and post something about how to make it perform better. For about $30 you can make that rebuilt run like a thoroughbred! There's LOTS of guys around here who can help.

94 Firebird Formula M6- No options but Z rated tires. No mods over $10. 13.5@105.
79 Malibu "beater" w/junkyard 400 SBC, tweaked QJet 4bbl, finally a decent set of heads, a few other tricks. A maddening 13.000001 @ 108 on the motor with little traction. No nitrous runs with the new heads yet.
Grandma's old 78 Malibu (33K miles!) soon to have the powertrain from the 79 put in it.
