Going with a Holley 750vac... What problems should I face?

Going with the Holley 750 with vacuum secondaries and electronic choke. I got a vacuum HEI too.

A few questions: Will it still pass emmissions? I was pretty free and clear with the q-jet. Mostly the visual was the part I failed. Which also means that I will have to put the stock aircleaner back on for 1 day while I get tested.

So... 1) Do I need an adapter to fit my Holley on my Performer manifold (it has holes drilled for each); 2) If I do need an adapter, will the stock air cleaner fit on under the hood; and 3) Can a dual bowl carb pass emmissions?

Another question is can I start disconnecting stuff form the engine that runs to the computer? Things like EGR wires but leave the vacuum hoses on to look stock? And the wire to the oxygen sensor... I have to hook my air/fuel ratio gauge up to it, but does it still need to go to the computer too? I guess I will also need to unscrew the SES bulb! Anything else I've missed in the archives?

Holley has a 600 or 650 cfm spreadbore carb that will bolt right up to the performer intake. Looks like you wouldn't need to mess with with fuel line either. It's basically a quadrajet clone but probably more reliable.

I'd say you're playing with fire. In some places, the visual includes checking to see that the SES light come ON when the ignition is turned on but before the engine is started, and goes OFF when the engine is started.

If you failed visual with the q-jet, and you do all the things you're talking about, visual will be your weak point again.

The Holley spreadbore is hardly a q-jet clone. Reliability is a subjective thing, but I wouldn't give Holley spreadbores the nod there. Besides, a squarebore will bolt to the Performer, and the stock aircleaner will bolt to the Holley with the proper stud.

If you really want to run a Holley, I'd suggest getting through the emissions inspection and testing with the stock hardware, then putting it in a box in the attic while you have the Holley equipment on.

Well, considering there is something stuck in one of the idle ports in the base of the q-jet (and I snapped off the screws holding on the throttle plate in one of the primary bores too), I am definately going to have to go with the Holley. Not to mention, I have to return my electronic HEI as a core charge.

I don't think they care if the SES light comes on because the car is running the whole time when they do the E-check. Mostly , they look for the TAC sensor, the AIR and smog pump, and one or two other things. They don't even remove the air cleaner to look at the carb either. I was wondering if they looked at the wires going to the EGR or not... We should have an "emmissions board" or a tech article about this!

U wont pass emissions, u have to remove lots of lines. ive got a holley 650 dp, about to go way bigger. i had a edelbrock 600 on my old performer rpm intake, and that wouldnt even pass emissions..

Hey, what are you going to do with your old q-jet?

I could use an airhorn.

Normally, I'd say it is yours... but it looks like I may have to keep mine and get a new base so I can pass the e-check in a month!
