Too Lean?

Recently my edelbrock carb. as be backfiring when I first put in under load even letting it warm up. I readjusted the choke. I have also had a coolant temp. problem lately and was told the engine running lean could cause the temp. to rise. Could this be why the carb. is backfiring. How do I fix this. Which way do I adjust the air/gas screws on the carb.

the screws are for idle air fuel mixture only. If your idle was too lean, it simply wouldn't idle, so it's not that.

First make sure everything in the carb is clean and working properly before trying to adjust the A/F ratio. A clogged air bleed will give you too much fuel. A leaky booster gasket could give you not enough fuel. Most Edlebrock carbs come jetted very close to correct from the factory.

backfiring and temperature problems sound more like an ignition problem than a carburetor problem.

How about a vacuum leak somewhere??? How's your vacuum at idle look? How high/low is it, I mean?

the cc q-jet also has a distributer to go with it. You installed the non-computer carb and a non-computer distributer. Your whole combo is different--you can't compare the two. Make sure your timing is correct, I would try around 8 base(about . What is your base/total timing? Vacuum leak could be the problem. Non-functioning or poorly functioning accelerator pump will cause a lean condition and possible backfire. In the case of my holley, a broken accelerator pump check valve. But that's another story.
Advance/retard the timing a bit and see if that helps.

a mechanical problem like a sticking, bent, or broken valve will cause backfiring under load.
