Best Mods for all around fuel economy?
Best Mods for all around fuel economy?
Well I've noticed some people asking about fuel economy mods but the questions were not direclty asked in an open forum.
So on a "basicly stock" LG4 "Not computer controlled" With a descent cam what can be done to increase fuel economy? Change air filter assembly to an open eliment, use smaller metering rods? Stuff like that.

FYI smaller metering rods will deliver more fuel given the same jet size. Sizing rods depends on several things including how many steps the rod has and how strong the spring is that supports it.

You can get a msd box that will help.Coil most of your ingnition parts will improve gas mileage.

85 iroc with 305 weind single plane intake, 650 double pumper, msd crap, holley mechanical fuel pump, cam is 230 duration 453 lift, 350 turbo tranny, 2400 stall soon to be 3000, 125 horse shot of nos, 4.10 gears, lower end is built and i shift the 305 at 6500, just for you 305 doubters pull up next to this 305 and get a little

The BEST thing you can do is get the engine is sharp tune with whatever combo you've got. Then get a DEAD-ON alignment and make sure tires are properly inflated and that the brakes aren't dragging. Changing all the drivetrain fluids can also impprove economy from reduced friction. Synthetics are expensive but also have a lot less friction than traditional lubricants.
After that you're looking at using taller gears in the rear to keep RPMs down (and effectively killing performance out of the hole, too).
As far as engine mods concentrate on the carb and distributor. If you are running with the vacuum advance disconnected you are giving up 4-5 MPG right there, and killing plugs in under 10,000 miles. Doing a full recurve of the distributor's various advance mechanisms and initial timing setting can also pay big dividends. Crane has a good HEI recurve kit that comes with instructions good enough that you can do it yourself and get decent results. You DID ditch the stock computer controlled distributor when you got rid of the computer DIDN'T YOU? Running a stock CC HEI distributor without the computer is a BIG no-no as you will have NO advance curve at all.
As for the carb, you want to concentrate your efforts on the IDLE CIRCUITS, not so much on the jets and rods. You run 80% of the time on the idle circuits!!! At the very least adjust the idle mixture screws as lean as they will go without causing the engine to stumble. Any other tuning of the idle circuits will require taking the carb apart. You might want to play with the primary jets as they can help a little, too. But changing stuf in the xecondaries is useless since they only come into play when you open 'er up.
Speaking of which...... the single BEST way to get decent economy out of a V-8 is to KEEP YOUR FREAKING FOOT OUT OF IT!

Yea I like the keep your foot out of it idea
seriuosly though this is my mostly stock "gas saver" my 85 is my gas guzzelen toy.
All of the CCS or as I like to call it CC BS is removed and replaced with the correct parts. I did try one mod, the open eleiment air filter and it improved throttle resoponce dramaticly I was getting about 17 city with the stock single snorkle. I need to check the miles at the end of the week fill up to calculate what im getting now.
