There was a design change during the 1988 model year for the top latches at VIN #181698 to the 2nd design according to my Chevrolet Camaro 1982-1992 Parts & Illustration Catalog. I believe the bracket receivers riveted to the front windshield headerbar were changed also.
Check your VIN to see if you have the 1st design or 2nd design top latches on your 1988. Not sure, but possibly you may be able to put the 1st design latches onto the later ragtop frame which would allow it to be latched in front.
The B-piller mounted pivot point setup is the same.

I put a 91/92 style top frame on my 89 with no problems. Everything lined up. I have a set of 91/92 pieces that bolt to the windshield header if your pin alignment/type is different.
