Convertible Trunk Rust

My 89 is starting to really show the rust under the rear lip of the turnk. Anyone have a good recommendation on saving the original trunk lid as I'd imagine a replacement lit is pretty expensive (most convertible specific parts are). Just some good body work technique?
Thanks

A couple of questions?

Do you intend on doing the work your self, or have a shop do the work? If you are going to do the work yourself, I would start with having the whole trunk lid dipped to remove any paint and rust in those hard to reach places, anything less will only start to rust again, considering the KEYS Weather. They can also dip the lid in a rust preventer. Then find somebody with a Tig welder, form some new metal to fit then weld it in place. I am one of those types who just have to do it myself.

Next, what is so different about our cars vice a non-convertble? They all started life as "T-Tops" so why would a same year junk yard trunk lid work? I do not know your money situation, but I would think it wouldn't be to hard to replace yours.

Coupes have a glass hatch with a metal piece attached to the rearmost portion. Convertibles have a trunk lid. They are not compatible. As previously mentioned it IS specific to the F-bodies converted by ASC.

Keep your eyes open on E-Bay.. I see them on there every-so-often. They arent too bad price wise.

Thanks everone for the replies. I especially like the idea of having the lid dipped. I've noticed one thing about the two convertibles I've owned; the factory parts are VERY resistant to rust and the paint held up fairly well. The ASC specific metal parts rusted very easily and the paint never held up as well. The first paint to fade on the car was the trunk lid and plastic fins on either side of the quarters.

Thanks again.

Mine is actually down under the spoiler were the lid curls over the tail lights. I stopped some rust that was under the trunk weather seal (the lip the weather strip attaches too) with a POR-15 like substance.
