Convertable top frame spring wires

When I put the top down on my '89 one of the spring wires on one side broke. They are both bent real far like they maybe should not? These are the wires that are above the side windows and are nearly straight when the top is up. I went to put the top down on my '91 and the hatch would not close. The spring wires looked real bent with the paint flaking off .....
Am I doing something wrong? Is there 2 ways to fold these things down?
thanks!

That rod is what I call the "flip rod". I'm out of stock on them. Until you can get a replacement you can remove them from both sides. From now on you'll have to manually raise the #2 bow as you lower the top. If you don't raise the bow the top will fold up short and hit the top of the rear seats.

yikes

The 91 has the springs there like the '89 used to. Am I having the #2 bow go the wrong way and bending the springs till they break plus the top won't go all the way down? I must be because the hatch won't close when I get my tops down. I have a few of these cars but almost never put the tops down. Watch out, keep me away from any convertibles if you want your top down.:

Just unbolt the flip rods and leave them off. Mine are in the garbage. When you want to take your top down: From the driver's side, lift the front with your right hand and push the #2 bow toward the rear as you retract the top. This will fold it neatly and effortlessly behind the rear seat.
