Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
Yes the fender flares were very ghettofabulous.
I found this Vert in the Chase area. I was at a Junk Yard called Easy Pickins.
I found out today that they have located the title for it. It is a regular title and not a salvage. The only problem I have now is that they say it has a lein indicated on it??? I am going down tomarrow to pick it up. I guess I will have to contact the previous owner to get the lein release or something. I don't want to get a salvage title for it.
If anybody in the area knows body work and paint and would like to share their knowledge I would love to learn more on that. I can do some of it but as far as what to do and what is called for for different damage, that's fuzzy for me. Like the rear bumper, do I sand off all the paint and start from scratch or do I chip off the flaky paint and put a glaze on the messed up area???
Parts for the car are not that hard to find as long as your not talking about Vert specific parts. The fenders will be easy and the bumper not so difficult. The GFX might be harder. Most of the interior is identical to the hard top cars minus some of the rear panels. Carpet, seats, dash, and trunk pieces will be the same or close enough. Those are the pieces I need. Pretty much all the vert specific stuff is good to go.
Thanx Guys.
89305Formula> Have you been to the Lowe's in Abingdon on Friday nights. I along with some other menbers of this board go there most every other friday. Look for a group of third gens. We don't bite.

dont bother with the old owner, go right to the lienholder themselves. call them and have em send you a sheet saying they no longer have interest in this car. been there done that.

FIRECHICKEN: Looks like a great find! A couple things are in your advantage. One...it runs. Clean up the motor, toss a couple parts at it, and it should be good to go. Check over that wiring real good. Make sure the previous guy didnt do anything in his obvious quest to "pimp" it out.
Two, your radiator support looks straight. Thats a biggie. Along with the impact back looking straight. That means the chassis horns are probably more or less straight. That means everything you need to replace is bolt on. Big time/work saving!
I think once you put new fenders, hood, bumper, lights on it, the front end will be atleast semi presentable. Take some time and do some prep for paint yourself. Seems like the more prep you do yourself, the better the maaco jobs come out. Or if you are really ambitious, check out autobody101.com, grab yourself a cheap spray gun, build a temp booth in the driveway and give it a try.
Ide just keep the 305 in there too. You said your wife is gonna drive it. That'll be fine for her for now. It will run nice, be easy to drive, and still fun.
Good luck! Keep us posted like you have been!

I have considered setting up for replacement Spoiler & spears (caps) & make out of epoxy fiberglass... I am not sure what kind of interest there would be but I have considered it.

I guess that would depend on the demand for it, the price, and the quality. I don't think I would need one but other I have talked to would kill for a good Vert spoiler.
UPdate: Still need front end parts and I need to get the Lein relaesed on the title. If anybody has experience with titles and Leins please shoot me a PM.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
I think the first thing you would have to do is find out WHO has the lein on the car.
Then see what the lein is for, and how much...
Then you will have more options to go with...

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
I know who has the lein. I have the title now and it is stated there. My problem is how to go about approaching them so where I am at the advantage and can get the release easily with out giving much, if any, money for it. The previous owner did not sign the title when he sold it to the JY though. I don't know if this will be a problem or not. I tried to look him up but found no records. I have his full name, DL#, the previous tag number, previous address, and the VIN to go off of.
My next move is to call the little auto parts store that has the lein. I think it's a " Mechanic Lein" probably for service they did to the car?

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
Find out how much to pay it off... I would not let them know who you are either. BUt you may be able to swing something to where you pay a portion of the lien or nothing at all and have it free and clear. At this point they might accept a portion of it just to have something or they may have written it off at this point. OR it might be a scam...
In any case the lein will remain on the car until it is cleared by the lein holder.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
I'm not familiar with how that will work. Lets say the lien is $3,000 on the car, will he have to pay that before he can get the car titled in his name. I would think that it is still the original owners responsibility. That would really suck if you can't get it in your name because of this....... I mean it was basically abandoned by the previous owner if it was sitting in a junk yard.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
Alright, here is what I found out.
I called the place with the Lien and talked to a finance manager. He looked up the previous owners name a found out the guy still owes them $1800 and some change. Ouch!!! He told me it was for repair back in 2004. I forgot to ask what was repaired, but for that I am assuming like a tranny rebuild or something. I told him I bought it off a JY and they had the title as well. He replied that the JY should never have accepted it with a lien on it and that they probably could not even get me a salvage title because of that. He then stated that he was not trying to get anybody in trouble but he couldn't release the Lien without payment of the money they were owed for originally filing the lien and doing the financing and fees for releasing the lien. He said that would be $250. If I brought cash he would issue me a lien release on the spot. I guess that is not too bad for having the title clean and in my name instead of a salvage title.
So I guess I am now going to go down there maybe this weekend and get the lien release and transfer the title as quickly as possible while my luck holds out??!!

If all it is is $250....run the cash down there as quickly as possible and do it! High tail it out of there with a clean title and count yourself lucky!

[QUOTE=91 Ragtop;3494460]It obviously wasn't for front body repair...

Funny REAL funny.
I believe that it was total of $250. There is no way in hell that I would pay someone elses $1800 bill on top of that. I would swap VINs and titles first.
I'll see if I can pry $250 from the wifes iron grip to pay the devil his due.
L8R people.

Sounds like a good lesson to be learned. Never leave without a title before you purchase a car like this.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
I purchased the car on the knowledge that the car only came with a salvage title. I was not promised a regular title. It was a bonus that they were able to find the title and I was able to get the information to be able to possibly secure a clean title making the car 3x more valuable in the future than when I bought it from the JY. The only down side to having the go get a Lien release is the fact I have to pay $250 more than I originally planned. In the end it will be worth it I think to have a car that’s 1 of 663 made.
I have secured permission to get the Lien release from the wife so we'll see how it goes on Sunday.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
OK. Here is the news. I went down to the Lien holders place about 11:30. He told me to be there between 10 and 2. Guess what. He wasn't there. I found something to do for 2 hours. I went back about 2 and he still wasn't there. I had the guy that was there call him up. Apparently he had never planned on coming in today. He did however instruct the guy there to give me the lien release. So the guy muddled through filling out the release. I looked it over and all seemed OK so I gave up the dough. I got the lien release and a work order from the repairs that were done to the car in 2004. The previous owner had a rebuilt/exchange transmission put in at 150,795 miles. The car now has 158,945 miles. So basically about 8K miles ago it got a new tranny. That was music to my ears. Transmissions are the only thing I shy away from. So to hear that it was fresh, made my day. Oh, apparently he got a free 27" TV when you spend over $1000 in repairs. I still haven’t found it though. Maybe it's under the back seats??
Well that's the latest. I'm off to the dreaded MVA sometime this week hopefully. Wish me luck.

NEWS FLASH..... This just in.
I went to the MVA today (fri). I gave my lien release letter and somewhat questionable title to the hobbit looking gentleman across the counter. He spent quite a few minutes looking at it then at me then at the screen then at me then at it then at the screen again. I was for sure he was going to tell me something like, this car has been reported stolen!! All I got from him was, $73 please. I gladly whipped out the double platinum astronomically high limit credit card and paid the man. bling bling!!
So, I should have a nice clean as a whistle title in the mail in two weeks.
Still no progress on the body work though. Not enough hours in the day!!
Keep me in mind if you all find a 91-92 bird in the Junk Yards.

I have received the title in the mail today. It is clean and clear fellas. All is well with the universe. However all is not well with the progress of body work. Still don't have any parts or money to buy parts. I'll let you know when the next big break through happens.. L8R

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
Well,
Here is an update!!!!
I have aquired most all the parts I need to rebuild the front end. I was able to find a donor car with no engine and trans that the owner was willing to let me remove anything I needed. As of right now I have replaced the drivers door and fixed a golf ball size rust hole in the door frame. I also found that the fenders for a hard top are different than a vert. I had to drill out the spot welds on the lower mounts and weld them to the new fenders. I then had to trim some excess fender to make it work with the vert sub frame connectors. I have decided to reuse the slightly bent bumper support and sell the replacement I removed from the donor car. Hopefully I can recover some of the costs of the parts. I will be in search of a cheap paint job for the multi colored T/A.
I know I said I would have her on the road by late spring. I underestimated the difficulty of locating the donor parts. I hope it's all worth it!!!???

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
It was a long and bumpy road to find some parts. There was no way in hell to find very parts cheap so this was as good as I was going to get. The modifications were'nt that bad.
The third pic is the rust hole I hogged out and then made a patch panel for. I didn't find anymore holes other than that yet.
I just finished putting the fenders on. It's a beeyoch lining up the fenders with the door and the hood. I noticed that my passangers side door is hanging low though. I am also trying to paint the areas that may be hard to get to with the car assembled.
I can tell you it is starting to look stupid in two tone.

Glad to hear it's coming along. Maaco did my paint job and I'm happy with the way it came out. It was a base / clear job so it wasn't the cheapest. I paid around 1300 when it was said and done. That included the color change and the door jams and under the hood. They definately look MUCH better as 1 color. I'll be looking for more updates!!

Thanks, I hope she'll turn out to be diamond in the rough rough. It was either me or the crusher for this vert. I think I'm going to get the body back together then send it through state inspection to put it on the road. I'll worry about getting the finish work done as I go.

Re: 1992 Trans am convertible. Is it worth buying??
Well guys,
Not a super amount of progress here. I got all the front end parts on atleast.
I ran into a small snag with the mechanicals. I pressure washed the front end before I put the new parts on. When I went to start the car the next day it would not fire. I think I have diagnosed the problem to the fuel pump. What I don't get is the coincidence between pressure washing one day then no start the next. Anyway I don't have any fuel pressure at the rail but I can hear the pump come on. I'm looking into it. Too many projects around here.
