TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

Has anyone ever tinted a rear window on a vert? The few places that i talked to said that it cannot be done because it's a plastic window. They said that the glue would melt the window with time.

I heard the same thing. I had the static cling tint on mine for awhile, until I folded the top down. Then it was a big ball of plastic After reading some of the other threads and posts, there is a co. makes a stayfast top w/ a glass window.

There have been a few threads on these boards concerning this issue. If you want to do a search I'm sure you'll find a handful of them. In the mean time, here is a company that myself along with many others here will recommend to you if you are looking at buying a new top. I bought the Stayfast top in black with the glass window and had the window tinted 20% and I think it looks pretty darn good.

Here's the top for the '87-'89

And the '90-'92

http://www.topsonline.com/index.php?...CarmodelID=113

And here's what mine looks like:

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

How does the glass work when you fold the top down? From what I have seen it looks like the glass would need to fold. If not wouldn't a cross brace rest on it?

It folds up and down just fine. The only thing is you have to have the rear seats folded down when you're putting the top up and down, because the bottom of the glass will hit the top of the rear seats. If you fold the seats down you get the lip of the glass past that part and it goes down into it's resting place just fine. You can put the seats back up when you're done.

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

Did you install it yourself or have it installed. Looks great. My son and I just installed a top on a Vette using a video. Went on really easy. thanks.

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

I had a shop install it. They were reasonably cheap compared to what others have paid. The install was $250.

Correct me if I'm wrong BlueZee28, but the plastic window's fold is near the top of it. The glass window is not the same size (slightly smaller) as the plastic window and positioned slightly lower. These two factors also help deal with the fold issue.

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

As for the inital question of the thread:

I would think that any kind of tint would come off after a few times of putting the top down because as the window bends and flexes it would probably delaminate with the tint.

As for melting. I know that some window tinting materials can damage other plastics so there may be an incompaitbility issue by using a vinyl to vinyl anyways. I know this is incompatibilty issue is true with some vinyls and Acrylic (Plexiglas).

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

So the only possibilty is to install a glass window? Or could I install a glass window inplace of my plastic, on my existing top?

Re: TINT ON THE REAR WINDOW

I would think if your that hard up for it then you might see if you can get some tinted transparent vinly and have someone sew it in. I know someone makes it, finding it might be the trick.

This is true. The glass window is slightly smaller and the fold is above the window which is how it can fold up and down without breaking the glass. It's a really well designed top, I was really pleased with how it fits on my car.

You'd find that it's not worth the money to pay someone to stitch a tinted plastic window into your old top. The labor rate for having someone remove the old plastic window and putting a new one in the existing top is more expensive than paying someone to install a brand new top. It's about twice as much $ if I remember correctly.
