It depends. Early 87 ones would have the tonneau latch release handle that uses two rods to push the lever to release the pin holding the #5 bow to the tonneau. Later 87 would have the handle assembly that uses a cable to pull the lever to release the pin. The later cable style is still available from GM and is superior to the discontinued rod and bell-crank style.

my 88 has the rod system i think they changed it to the cable in late 88 or early 89. the tonneau cover is the same size.
