question about the wires coming from the tonneau solenoids
question about the wires coming from the tonneau solenoids
I was wondering where these wires are suppose to go? I have an 89 rs and can see that the wires lead to the trunk of the car with a red wire on the driver's side and a black wire on the passenger side then they run into a plug but i cant find anything for the plug to plug into. When I hit the tonneau release i hear the click in tne center console but that is all i hear and im sure that plug goes to something but cant for the life of me figure out why it would be in the trunk anyways... Any help fellas?+

Does your trunk pull-down unit work?
Can you upload a picture of the "plug" and give a bit better description of what is running to where?
Thanks!

I think the wires went to what was suppose to be a safety switch where the trunk can't be opened when the tonneau cover is open. Do the convertibles have the pull down motor? Mine has like a magnant to the left side of fhe key hole but there is no motor or anything.

THere is only one wire on mine and yes it starts near the trunk lock. It goes through a harness that is supposed to attach to some sensor to prevent opening when the trunk is open. If your like me, the motor had been replaced and there was no more sensor. Just jump wire it and it will work again. That single wire leads to the passenger solenoid and T's to the drivers one as well running under the rear seats under the carpet. The system uses the cars metal as the ground at each solenoid.

Yes thats the wire I'm talking about that goes to the passenger side solenoid and t's off to the other side. If there is not a switch at the back should it not still work as there would be nothing telling it not to open? How do I jump wire it to see if that will work? Just connect the end at the trunk to a positive lead?

Re: question about the wires coming from the tonneau solenoids
If it is not plugged to anything it acts like a break in the line (no current flow). Place a jumper across the two pins and it will let the current flow to the solenoids. The switch that is missing is a normally closed switch which opens when the trunk does.
If this does not work you can test the circuit by placing a multi-meter or 12V light into harness (supply end coming from Left side of trunk) and to a ground lug and see if it lights up when you hit the switch on the console. If it does not then check the fuse or relay under the console next to the e-brake. (Your car has to have the e-brake on too if a std. In park if auto)
