Re: My new project
Here are some progress pics of the last couple of weeks work.Haven't got as much done as I wanted but my daughter came in from outa town, been spending time with her. Here is a before of the dash.

And here is where I'm at now.

I had to put in some serious thinking before putting out the money for the gauges.I got more in them than I paid for the car!Took almost two days to make the wiring harness for them since they are all mechanical I didn't have to locate very many factory wires.Bad thing is I plugged one wire on the fuel gauge in the wrong place and cooked my tank sending unit.
Located some Iroc tailights and put the spoiler back on while back there.

Under hood wires have been thinned out considerably.Still a little messy but they need to stay up out of the way for a while anyway.

The unnecessary wiring taken out.

And finally the 4th gen seats that will be going in eventually.I will most likely wait until everything is done to put them in.

I think I am at a standstill for a little while though. The slave cylinder is moving the clutch fork enough to disengage the clutch but it's not.If I have to pull the motor and tranny I am going to go ahead and clean up the engine bay and paint it.I was wanting to take it out on the road and blister the tires real good before doing this, but if I gotta take it out I am darn sure not bolting it back in just to take it right back out.
I had to delete some of the removed wiring pics but you get the hint.

Nice gauge cluster. Those things ain't cheap, however they look sweet. I need some more pictures of the wires I can rip out. Or better yet which ones stay. If you have some pictures please let me know and I will give you my email address. Thank you. Lookin' good by the way. Please say you are gonna get rid of that sticker on the back bumper.
Alright bro, well when you get a little further in the project I will inform you . THATS MY CAR! I left it in Ohio years ago. Thank you for finding it.

Anything in particular would like done to your car while I got it?Yes not only will the sticker be coming off I will probably replace the whole cover.Been looking for something nice at the junkyards but most look worse than mine. The front and rear cover both are spider cracked really bad.
If you are getting rid of your computer, running a carb and have an HEI what I did was any wire coming out of the computer going through the kick panel and up to the engine bay was cut at the plug in the kick panel. When I pulled the plug up into the engine compartment I traced where they went and none of the computer wires stayed. There is still a decent wad of wires around the blower motor, they stayed.Any wire going to the starter stayed.Either two or three for the alternator stayed,I don't have an alt. in it yet so I'm not sure there. My car had an electric cooling fan but I don't have any wires going that direction so plan B will be instated for fan wiring. The headlights are in there own loom so they stayed. There were some relay looking things behind the brake booster that all got cut, most of these wires went to the computer eventually.I will have to make a harness for the wipers, the motor was missing when I bought it so someone helped themselves to the harness.I no longer have power windows so a lot of wiring came out from the console area that runs under the seat and down the rocker panel.Should have left some of that cause my 4th gen seat is power, could have used a power wire.
The few wires I ran are for the gauges and HEI.
If you need help let me know while it's a little fresh in the head it won't take long before it's lost. When I learn something new something old leaves. Not many brain cells left to store to much info.

Thank you for the info I plan to do it this weekend hopefully. I will let you know how that comes out. Also if you could put a nice paint job and new top on my car for me I would greatly appreciate it. LMAO. No really, it's looking good. You read that thread on the Rustolem $50 paint job?? Crazy stuff there. It sounds just Red Neck enough for me to try.

I don't know if I read the same article but everyone I have read requires too much sanding between coats or something like that.On my Jeep I tried the Duplicolor crap, never again.I've done better rattle can jobs.I will probably have this one painted.I want black and to look like a mirror.I painted a fishing boat this winter with Valspar enamel truck and trailer paint from Farm & Fleet,it turned out real slick.I'm not sure about trying it on a car though. On your wiring project be sure and do something with the power wires that go to the computer.I traced mine back to the fuse panel area and either pulled the connector out of box or terminated the end with tape real good. You don't want energized wires floating around the metal dash framework or your ride may go POOF.I hate it when that happens

I think the previous owner didn't get something in the tranny correct. The slave cylinder moves the fork enough to disengage the clutch but it's not.I think I will use this oportunity to pull the engine and tranny and clean the engine bay, paint it, get the wiring in looms and delete the A/C stuff.
I wanted to get it on the road and play around this summer some but I had a reality check with myself and realized I don't need to rush.Do it right the first time instead of half***

Thanks for the offer. I have already removed all that wiring and don't really want to put a bunch back in.I know fuel injection is far superior to a carb in every way.I just wanna stay semi old school.Been a long time since I had something that wasn't FI.

New top and paint,no problem. You don't mind if it's a professional paint job though do you?I can't see the Rustoleum method for a car that doesn't belong to me

Be sure to check the label on the boat paint, some are specific to wood, aluminum or steel. It would suck to put the work in and it start peeling off right away.I had to thin the truck and trailer paint in order to spray it.

Re: My new project
Well after making several attempts to get the clutch working I said the heck with it and started tearing the project down starting up front.

After pulling the engine I found this great idea someone had for attaching the motor mount.

I think I am going to start looking for a complete parts car now.I also discovered where someone welded the rear of the A frame mount to the crossmember. While this may not be a huge issue as it looks like a good weld,I still don't like the thought of suspension parts welded. Not sure why this was welded doesn't appear to be any damage.Soon I will be degreasing and pressure washing the engine bay.

Re: My new project
The only reason I was getting it in drivable condition was to take it out and just burn the tires off and then tear it all apart.Since all the leaves fell off the money tree out back I figured I would start doing some time consuming stuff like cleaning up the engine bay, take all the seats and carpet out.By then I should have enough money built back up to have a floor pan put in it.One of the few things I am going to pay someone else to do.My old buzz box welder just blows threw sheetmetal.Thinking about getting some goodies for the engine while it's out.
I think it's gonna be a crappy summer for a vert this year anyway.Last month it rained 17 of 30 days and at least 5 so far this month.I've only gotten the Jeep out twice.I'm not even going to de-winterize the boat this year.

Yea I know what ya mean.About the only thing I know for sure about this car is that it's an 88.If she read my posts I stated I'm 99% sure it's not an Iroc either.Without original RPO codes who knows for sure, not enough info in VIN's.Oh well, I got the title back the other day and it's clear.

I know all about the $$$ tree. Someone actually cut mine down. As far as boats go I am getting ready to buy one. Wife wants one so that puts my Camaro on back burner for God knows how long. And I have to buy something to pull it. I found a Suburban I am going to buy . All lifted and what not.

Re: My new project
Oh yea I been staying busy on it.I been stripping paint in the engine bay and the front panel behind the headlights. It takes so much time applying stripper letting it work and then scraping off the goo a few hours in the evening after work goes by fast.Under the black paint on the front panel is white paint.I don't know what this stuff is but airplane stripper takes 3 and 4 coats to cut it.The factory paint bubbles up and falls off practically.I know the stripper I'm using is good stuff,it burns through my gloves in just a few minutes.I'm just now making enough progress to be worthy of taking some picks.I'll try and remember to tomorrow night.I need to keep up with progress photos anyway,I may make a scrapbook of the project.I have found some damage from a wreck at some time.Appears to have been fixed properly cause I didn't find it until stripping paint and pulling the engine.I need to find a parts car cheep.I need some big dollar stuff that is usually in good shape on most cars.I need the front suspension crossmember,a drivers side floor board(which I knew was bad when I bought it)and a windshield.
Oh yea I stripped out the all the seats, carpet, seatbelts etc, everything but the main part of the dash.
The wife has been dropping heavy hints that we needed to go and hang out some, so last Saturday we went and watched some dirt track races.Think I better quit playing with the Maro so much before she cuts down her half of the money tree LOL!
Thanks for asking about the progress it helps keep me motivated.

Re: My new project
I have made some progress lately.Got the wife an old Honda for a work car,the Durango is costing a fortune in gas,it needed some work so I been busy on it for a couple of weeks.I had to get some bare metal primed while I make up my mind on what to do with the drivers side.Since I have a manual fuel pump I want to run the fuel line down the passenger side and probably take the steering box off and check for cracks behind it.Here are some more progress picks.

Floorboards aren't too bad,I've seen worse in our area.

I was pleasantly surprised when taking the carpet up in the trunk.

That's about it so far while I save up for the next round of stuff I need.

Well bro it's hard to say this but sometimes it happens. The Camaro is going up for sale. I bought a family car so I am selling this because no sense in keeping it in storage for God knows how long. I will keep in touch and be following this thread so when I do get another Maro I can follow your steps. ---------------- Now playing: Guns N' Roses - Paradise City via FoxyTunes

Yea keep in touch. There will always be another car come up eventually, family stuff always comes first.I know how you feel selling though,I still have a sore spot towards the ex wife for talking me into selling a very sweet Mach-1 so we could remodel the house and that was 15 years ago.I'll never be able to replace that one.As winter approaches my progress will slow down even more. It's way too expensive to heat a 46x60 garage. My job requires me to work in the cold most of the day,I'm not going to get cold anymore than I have to,gettin to old for that crap!

I just bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Nice car and that says alot coming from a Neck like myself. I told the wife once we sell the condo and get a house with a garage I am picking up either a 70's vette or another gen 3 camaro rolling chasis and build it. Wish I could goto a race. I think I am either gonna goto Talladega or Daytona next year. I have a customer that gets tickets every year and never goes.

I went older for a small car. It's an 86 Accord but it runs like a sewing machine on steroids, and gets 30+ mpg.Couldn't go wrong for $500,makes a great work car.If you can get those race tickets I would go for Daytona,Talledega is sweet to watch on TV but I have heard you can't see at least half the track. We used to go to Charlotte every year for the Coke 600 but we have really been loosing interest the last couple of years.

Besides I don't have up front money for a mint car,I'll have to let this one nickel and dime me to the poor house

With the exception of the new gauges, they were not a necessity I just wanted them,I've got right around a $1000 including the price of the car.I figure I should come in around the $8-$10,000 range.

Besides I don't have up front money for a mint car,I'll have to let this one nickel and dime me to the poor house

Re: My new project
I don't know if my car will ever bring the big bucks since it won't even be close to stock.Without the original RPO codes I'm not even sure what this car originally was.I know it was TBI so I'm sure it's not an Iroc.Like you said Verts are selling good and from what I have seen on Barrett-Jackson resto mod values are coming on strong.Maybe mine will fit in that niche.Besides you can't put a price on a load of compliments people give you for a nice looking ride.I still get the big head from compliments on my Jeep I did last summer.

Re: My new project
I guarantee that when done it will rattle considerably less than a stock one. These cars were not build with great quality! I was very lucky and found mine for $1000 with a bad clutch, hood missing, right front fender dented and to my surprise a newly rebuilt engine. However, this bad boy has something going wrong all the time and some of the gremlins are a pain in the ****. He is basically putting in the time all at once instead of piece meal like I am doing.
If I had a garage like he does, I'd be tempted to remove everything, sound deaden, tighten, re-weld, re-paint etc. He will know that car from the bottom up whereas I can only guess on most of mine.

That is my agenda.I am shooting for completion next summer, probably at the end.If I had the $$$$ I could easily be done by the first of the year. These cars are pretty simple once you get rid of all the computer stuff. Member

Anyway I picked up a Trans Am K-member this week, got it all tore apart and started sanding down this evening.I think I'm going to get a pressure pot sandblaster for this project.Took about 2 hours just too clean up an A-arm.Pressure washer got all the grime and grease off.New bushings and stuff should be rolling in tommorow or monday. Geez Breeze, you're turning into my hero. I have some eletrical problems, can't read a wiring diagram. Battery's dead tonite. The radio stayed on after shutting off the car. Gotta figure out why that would happen. So I lift the hood to unhook the neg. battery terminal...mouse nest nestled into the tubes off the TPI. Detached garage. Put out 5 Decons. All the wife's sh*&T going out of the garage next week. Stuff in there that's been there 10 years. Looking forward to your pics.

Better hope those mice don't get into the interior. They can chew up a harness under a dash in no time. They love making nests under back seats too.I have found nests, carcasses and piles of crap.Hot summer days really bring out the oder to.It's a bi*** to get rid of that smell too.
Got the "new-used" K-member painted today and the old one off the car.Took the fenders off and discovered the passenger side one was welded on at the botton. Not real sure why, everything looked good behind it,no rust or anything.Sunday's agenda is to remove the steering box and clean it.Check for cracks behind it.Remove the fuel lines, they're on the wrong side for my manual fuel pump.Maybe get the rest of the engine bay primed.
I have taking a few pics as I go.Will try and get them posted sometime in the week.

Just for some inspiration..
Turned this..
http://www.techcessive.com/vert06/
into this..

Most expensive part was the engine. Paint and bodywork wasn't that bad since I did it mostly out back of a house.

Re: My new project
Err we started on it April of 07 and I was driving it sept of 07. Granted I spun a rod bearing in it in april of 08 and I installed the new engine in the begining of aug 08. Most of the parts for the build I had from previous years of being in thirdgen's. Did spend a lot on it tho... Heh the car has been down more since I've owned it than I've driven it.. lol thats what a project os for I suppose. Then again over the winter I installed the AFR 195s Spohn K member 30lb svo's blah blah blah.
The wheels are 2001 SS rims with 275/40/17's at all 4 corners. The springs are stock iroc springs in the rear with a coil cut off and up from I have the Spohn coil over kit.. Hey I helped design it so why not have it
So I set the ride height where I wanted it. Which is about an inch above the tires up front. When I get my other puter back I'll have to repost up the porgess pics of last year.
Brennan The car was built in a driveway on 4 jack stands. No garage here.
here is most of the specs on the car..

I meant to ask you what junkyards around her have some 3rds? I live in Hurricane and work in Huntington. I've been looking around for some parts to get my Iroc rolling again.
I can't wait to hopefully see your car around in person someday. I am sure you'll agree that most of the 3rd gens around here are in sad shape. So it's nice to see someone doing it right.

Btw, I've seen the before and after on Kat's car. He did it in record time. lol

Re: My new project
Well I got a few things done this weekend.Got the new/used K-member sand blasted primed and painted.

Stripped out the fuel lines, brake lines and steering box and removed the old K-member.Primed the rest of engine bay.

Last night I painted the engine bay.I liked how the K-member came out so well I decided to go gloss black in the engine bay as well.I bought satin for it but I will probably be going with polished aluminum goodies on the engine,it should really pop.

It's not a perfect job but it will do for an old beater.

Re: My new project
You know sometimes I think I would rather do stuff like this as a job rather than a real job.I doubt seriously if anyone could afford to pay for the hours it takes,at least not the common person. Most people in this area if they have an interest in fixing their car up to this degree they can usually do it themselves. There have been a few specialty shops open around here but soon close.Just not enough market for it I guess.
I am going to try and start putting stuff back together this weekend.I forgot about painting the spindles and stuff.Cleaned them up last night and will paint them today but that puts me at least a two days behind.Had a busy week at work and had the don't want too's when I got home

Re: My new project
Well it has been a pretty productive weekend so far.Got the K-member in and the rest of the suspension as well.
The Eibach pro kit springs went in fairly easy.

The Spohn strut brackets.A lot beefier and taller than stock ones.

Sphon sway bar and wonder bar and the painted steering box.Pics don't show
the true paint color well it's actually darker in person, also polished the top on the steering box,but it doesn't show up well either.

Another shot of sway bars, new Moog steering components and motor mount inserts.

I am thinking about putting the disks back on tommorrow to see if the stance is any different. The Eibach springs were almost three inches shorter than the factory ones.Won't be able to get a good idea until the engines back in but I would think it would be a little noticeable.
