Trunk release button
Behind the shift lever is the button that slides forward and back. I think it releases the rear hatch on coupes. It was inop when I bought the car so I'm not sure if it is supposed to open the trunk in a vert or what. can someone tell me what it does in a convertible?
If so, is it electrical or attached to a cable or what? Thanks.

That switch operates the tonneau release. After rasing the rear of the top off the tonneau you press this switch and it fires the releases and allows the tonneau cover to rise.

Hes right, but mine doesnt work either. I *think* i traced it back to the solenoid 'poppers' being bad. They're behind the panel that holds the rear speakers.

have you guys tested you selinoids by putting power directly to them if not try that to isolate the problem a problem i have had a couple of times is a connector comming unplugged under hatch realease motor wich doesn't allow the tonneau to be popped if the trunk is open also it must be in park if at or parking brake applied if m/t

This is not an un-common occurrence in our cars. There is an interlock at the trunk latch that prevents the tonneau being popped while the trunk is open. If this were to happen expect to spend some dollars for paint to repair!
If you are standing at the back of the car looking down at the trunk latch there should be a wire plugged into the bottom of that latch a little more toward the left of center. If this is loosely coupled or disconnected your tonneau will not pop. you can test this by installing a loop between the two connectors that would eleminate the trunk switch from the circuit.
I danced a jig when I finally figured out why the trunk solenoids were not working!
