Re: New to the scene. a few questions

I agree with Campin1983 on this and partially with 86NiteRider. Not a cent over your low offer plus travel as is WITH a written quote from a licensed mechanic on the fix. Or your higher offer WITH mechanic receipt to guarantee fix. Although I think the car is worth a bit over 4k, you now have the upper hand because, either he's been playing you, or he's had an offer fall through. He may now be a bit more eager to close the sale. Good luck!

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

The guy doesnt know what to do. He wants more money, but he wants to sell it to. Let him come back to you, but I would have a mechanic check it out on your behalf first and make sure you have reciepts from a good GM mechanic for whatever fixes he has done. Give it some time, the guy will likely come back to you if he wants to sell it.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

What is a "pink slip"? In Illinois all you need is a signed clear title and it's yours. I can sell your car if I have the title and sign your name.

I would definetley take my time and find what I want. Your car is out there but you have to be willing to transport it or look in other parts of the country. Also look in backyards and open garages. It is amazing what some people are sitting on.

If that's your plan, look a little below your price range. See if you can't find someone whose having trouble with their tranny on an otherwise clean car. That would be ideal. (although I'm not saying its easy to find)

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Well it just so happens that a guy who seems like he knows
what's up says he has an 89 iroc
vert
with a 350 ( thought there wasn't 350's) in veers but his add is very deseciptive and car looks clean black with tan interior (not my favorite color ) but hey beggars right so he's only asking 3750 so if
I can get for 3500 and pay 1500 for the swap that would be awsome

IROC converts DID NOT come from the factory with 350's in them. So it was swapped in. Nothing wrong with that if done right.

You can always repaint the car. Probably should anyway.

Once again check the floorboards and all the other things we have talked about. Be sure to check the top operation since there are no pics of it down. If I ever was to sell mine I would post a pic of the top down.

Try to get info on the motor install such as when the motor was done and who did it. Also how many miles on the motor?

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Agree up top. Check it out thoroughly since this is a conglomerate/Frankenstein car. Firebird/TransAm wheels and interior. The engine is definitely a transplant cuz, if I recall correctly, MAP didn't come out until '90.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Definitely check it out with that engine transplant... but I think your on a much better track. This car seems to be of similar quality to the ones you've mentioned before, but are cheaper. You can do the tranny swap, work on paint, really do anything with the extra money you would have spent, and end up with a better car, assuming this one checks out alright.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Yes he was well aware that the engine didnt come in it. He has already smogged it and spent a pretty penny on a full injector and top end rebuild. We will see later today. Now I have to look into the interior as tan really does nothing for me so I assume black is a pretty penny to convert too. hopefuly carpet seats and door panels is all there is!Oh yeah big plus he has owned the car for 10+ Years so he said he ahs a full run down of whats what. we will find out and to think he is literally 5 blocks away..Just so happens he lives on a one way street I have NEVER been on lol

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Oh man you live in the bay area? I was just in SF a few weeks ago. I love it there! Looks like the guy has Firebird seats in the car. Anyway. You can buy new carpet for $150 and have new seat covers ($350) installed in the car. You can buy factory OEM seat coverings from most any 3rd generation parts site. But double check the drive train and the convertible top parts. Good luck!

If I get it. what are those wheels worth? Are they a big deal to the firebird crowd?

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Those wheels are very cool wheels and many people look for them. However, they are not so rare or neat as to be worth a fortune. I think they are worth keeping on the car, as they look better than anything you could buy by selling them.

Just a general comment for future potential vert buyers. There has been sooooo many cases of where owners swear it's a 350, or mistake an 305 for a 350 (the TPI's look pretty much identical), or pass on a claim that it's a swap, or lie to make a sale, or even forge or create false documentation and/or receipts of a swap, that I would never buy a 3rd gen Camaro vert with a "350" without verifying the block itself.

Good luck hunting.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

yes your right. I did not check anything other then the intake and the fact that it ran really smooth. problem here in nor-cal is paint from a decent shop starts at 3,000$ so if the paint is not driveable your screwed so the hunt continues...

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Definitely agreed. My vert is a 350 swap, but I certainly verified everything before I bought it.

Unfortunately what this thread is outlining is the difficulty of finding a moderatly priced 3rd gen, especially a vert. Most of the cars in this price range have had significant work done on them, but aren't quite done and still need work. The problem is, the price of that work to make them great cars still comes close to doubling the purchase price.

You will eventually find the right car. But you have to be sensitive and picky (as you have been) to be sure the money you are paying is for real substance and not someone's poorly finished project car, or souped up lemon. I think the right car is either going to be a "survivor" that someone has a bit underpriced or a car that needs work in an area you are comfortable with.

I would say you got at least 5K+ to put into that Camaro to get it the way you want. I bought a much nicer condition low mileage vert and have spent 5K on some paint and maintenance. The $ adds up very quick when fixing up one of these cars. Tranny's can be expensive. Why not find a car in nicer shape and spend the extra money, because you are obviously going to put it into a less expensive car?

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Looks good except for the hack job on the rear speakers. But it's an 88 with MAP instead of MAF so there may have been a swap or ECU conversion done. Also, there are no pictures of the tonneau release mechanism. Being an 88, depending on wether it's early or late design, that mechanism is based on rods or a release cable. If it's the rod system, it uses a plastic slide mounted on the driver side of the tonneau cover above the speaker and they tend to break. Problem is, if it's not there, you have two choices. If you want to keep it original, spend three years looking for a proper replacement (that's how long it took me to piece together mine) or convert with a kit from Hawks Third Gen Parts which is about $300. It also seems to need tires pretty soon. All in all it looks like a decent specimen.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Car looks good from the pics, but remember to ask all the same questions and use the same scrutiny you have on every other car. Make sure engine and tranny are working ok, all parts are in working order, and if not, keep the replacement cost in mind.

Again, looks good, but don't jump to any conclusions till you've put it through the same trials as all the other cars.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

YES i bought it woooohoooo!!!! No more pictures yet. I saw him teach me how to work the top but in my excitement complety forgot the steps. The car has posi also has a gm sticker on every part with the vin. The dash is perfect and center console lid is perfect. THe interior needs to be CLEANED but truth be told I really want black or charcoal interior. The rear speaker isnt as bad as it looked. The made a plate for the circle speaker so I assume usually there is a grill there that they took off. So if I can find the grill and a original size speaker Ill be in buisness. The levers adn switches all work to pop the vert top and lock it down.

So here is my situation. I pull the top out and push in the back first. then the passenger side locks in but getting the drivers side in wont happen any helful tips?

Well congrats on your 3rd gen purchase! Can't wait to see more pics and I'm sure we'll see you around the forums plenty.

Unfortunatly, I have a pre-authorized vert, so I have no idea how the factory style top works, lol.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Just called the PO. Said the trick is to sit in the car and shimmy it forward from the middle of the top. wich btw is in perfect condition. even the window is nice and clear. Any good tips on not screwing that up?

That window goes bad with exposure to sun and elements. Limiting that can keep the window fresh. On a car though, that can be difficult.

I really want black interior. Does the convertible require any special interior other than lets say a hardtop iroc?

Dash, front and back seats are the same. Carpet is different (I think its just the factory stuff, but in 3 pieces instead of 2), seatbelts are different, and much of the rear plastics are different.

You also will have the vert specific stuff around the back seat.

Seats will swap no problem. Just keep in mind that some seats don't look good in a vert. Make sure the back side of the seat looks ok, and fading shows ten times worse than in another car. But yes, all 3rd and 4th gen seats will fit.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Don't lock down the back of the roof first. Just set it down gently and leave it loose. Then lock the front latches down first. And be sure the door windows are down.
Not having the back of the roof locked down should give you enough slack to do the front latches. Then go back and do the rear of the roof.

Regarding locking down the rear of the roof, I don't like to shove or hit directly on the roof. Instead I lay one hand on the roof above the latch pin, and then press down on that hand with my other hand. That way I can press as hard as I want and make sure it snaps and locks down without being hard on the roof.

Regarding cleaning the rear plastic window, never EVER use anything abrasive. Even a paper towel will surface scratch the hell out of it. Treat it as you would an expensive camera lens or pair of glasses. Gently rinse off any dust or dirt. Do not use any cleaners with harsh chemicals or alcohol. Clean water with mild soap at the most.

Then to prevent spotting from drying water droplets, use a very soft cloth or clean chamois cloth and almost no pressure. Make sure the cloth or towel was not used for anything else. A cloth that was used on your washed paint or interior may still look clean but it can still pick-up particles that can't be seen that could still scratch the plastic. Be very light, almost gliding it across the plastic. Go in straight lines, not circular patterns.

Treat it well and minimize exposure to the sun and it should last many years.

Re: New to the scene. a few questions

Congrats!! Welcome to the Third Gen family. I'm partial to black interior myself but, that particular color car with the gold rims, really looks GREAT with the beige interior. I used to use Tuff Stuff for upholstery cleaning but I'm sure there are tons of newer, better products out there.
