I just recently acquired an 89 rs convertible with the 5.0 engine. I know that only 3245 rs convertibles were built in 89. Does anybody know how many were built with the 5.0 engine? Also, I took it to a body shop to see about getting the hood painted and fixing some very minor rust on the front fender wells. The body shop owner (very big into classic cars) siad he wouldn't touch it due to rare car. Other than the aforementioned rust the car is in great shape with 87K original miles. I am only the second owner of the car. Does anyone know what this car might be worth? I got it as part of a trade for my wife's minivan, but now don't want to mess it up with an average body shop paint job if it really is a rare car.

Ive come across several 89 rs 5.0 convertible Camaros and a couple with 5 speeds, dont know exact break down as to how many with 5.0 motor but I bet quite a few.
As to it being rare (not really) and not to have it painted, Id say go ahead and paint it if it needs paint

 

i thought all of the RS convertibles were 305's......I have had 2, and camaro heaven in tilton nh has a couple, and they are all 5.0's, I have never seen a factory RS convertible with out a 5.0 unless it was swapped.....I may be wrong but i think there is a sales flyer that lists the 5.0 as the only availabe engine.

From what I can tell rare may not be the proper word yet. That will depend on how many convertibles are left. If approx. 4,000 were originally bulit and there are only 500 left well then that will start to be rare. Give the verts some time and they will be much sought after. For my vert I am planning a complete paint job this winter. Hopefully the last paint job ever since we will be taking every part off and painting. This will be an expensive job but once done I will sit back and wait to see how rare my car becomes.

Since the car needs a solid paint job I feel I might as well do it right and hope the "rarity" comes in due time. If it does I will be ready and if it doesn't I will have a real nice paint job that will win car shows and look good at cruises.
