top broke. :(

Hey guys
Well recently the support bar for the passenger side of the tip that rests on top of the pass side window snapped near the latches in my 91 TA. I just assumed that all I needed to do was have it welded back together but I noticed that something else is bent, because it's difficult to get the broken pieces flush with each other and the fitment of the arms and bars on the driver side is a little different. The bent thing is what probably caused that bar to snap. Here are some pictures explaining the situation:

Same thing, another angle.

Size: 61.5 KB

Here's the driver side you can compare the two.

And what angle is this little bar supposed to be at? This is the pass. side one. The driver's side is a bit more bent.

So my other questions are:

What are the clearances supposed to be in between the bars in the convertible frame?

What do you think is out of whack?

And has this happened to anybody else? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks guys!

Re: top broke. :(

what makes you say that? I already know a guy that'll weld that thing for me for free but I just wanted to know what else could be bent so it doesn't break again.

Re: top broke. :(

Well I just got the bracket welded... tried bending it a little, now it looks good. I found a guy who welded it for free (i'll bring him a 6-pack sometime though ) and even ran an extra bead along that bracket to reinforce it. I just reassembled all of the trim and weatherstripping and it checks out for now. Although the top of the window doesn't align perfectly with the weatherstripping but I'll try tweaking it some more later since it got dark out. But now the top goes up and down smoothly and I'm pleased. I can post up a picture of the repair if anybody wants me to, I'm just a little lazy right now

Re: top broke. :(

No problem!

They did a very clean job with the welds... and you can see the extra bead that they ran where my finger is. ASC should've just ran the whole thing rather than that little 1 inch factory weld... would've been a bit stronger!

Re: top broke. :(

Aw man. I wish mine had broken somewhere I could weld it. Mine broke at the main support behind the pass window that holds the third bow. For some reason it was made of cruddy metal not easily fused back together.
