does this spot rust?

Hey guys, does the original factory rocker panel tend to rust out underneath the ASC reinforced rocker panel? The thing that's hidden by the ground effects on a 91 Trans Am convertible. My floor had a bunch of surface rust (which i stopped with Chassis Saver) that seemed to have been creeping up on that rocker panel, just wondering if I should be worried.

I dont see why our cars should be different from any other convertibles. I have two 60s mustangs and they both have a lot of rust on the rockers. One of the cars was rusted out on the inner rocker. I know the more modern cars are less prone to rust but I wouldnt count it out.

That's what I was thinking but taking off that special rocker panel off will probably be a real b**ch considering that it's riveted onto the body. And I'm sure that you'll have to brace the whole car somehow if you're gonna take that off. I wonder if SFCs are rigid enough to keep the car straight and aligned if I was to remove at least one of those rocker panel reinforcements.

Re: does this spot rust?

I would first put it up on a hoist and see if you have anything to worry about. You should be able to see rust some where along that panel if you have rust underneath. At least you have more to go on. I really dont think those panels do that much anyway. Nothing beats sub frame connectors. I think you would safely take them off if you had sfcs. I know what you mean about those large rivits. I was planning to take those panels off and add proper sfcs but after looking at them decided I may do too much damage to warrant that. I decided to put sub frame connectors on. Later I will add Sphon to mine.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There was some surface rust on the floor running along side of those things but it doesn't seem terrible, plus I painted it with Chassis Saver so that should do a good job protecting the metal.
