Driver Side Top Latch
My drivers side top latch is MUCH harder to secure than the passenger side. I'm afraid repeated use is going to cause it to fail. Anyone experience this?

It sounds as though your top frame is not aligned properly. My top latches work great.

How long have you had tha car? Is it new weatherstripping?
Has it been like this for awhile or something that just started happening?
You can adjust.
The pin receivers can but moved. The 2 screws in each have to be loosened,
then you can move them up or down.
**NOTE**
IF you have to remove the plastic "A" pillar, take your time & watch how the plastic mounting "tree" has to come out of the body.
IF you raise it too much, you'll have air & water leak!!
Some tops have adjustable pins, so that may also be something
someone who's done it can chime in.
Good luck

on my 89 the latches are shimmed, but the screws were a PITA to remove. I left the top down and used PB blaster for about 2 weeks and a impact driver.

I've only had the car about three months. It's been that way since the day I bought it. Even though I'm in Texas, it's getting just about time to get her up on jack stands for the winter and plow through some of those little annoyances with the car.

Yes you will have to remove the "A" and "B" pillar plastcs to get the 2 screws or small bolts, which ever are there.
Be careful pulling the "A" plastics-- it may be stubborn, but the body tree clip becomes brittle as does the thin plastic that holds it in.
When you get these off, you will see the 2 screws or bolts holding the pin receiver. There will be a small arc-shape in each that allows for movement.
While you have it this far, check the weatherstripping in the front corners for holes & tears, as well as the rest of it.
I haven't taken our tops apart, so IDK what weatherstripping is like in them, so I can't tell ya what to watch for.
(edit)
Here's a link to a pic of the arc shape that's under the pillar plastics--
