Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, progress on my '91 vert
Made some progress today, finally. This is the first time I have ever messed with fiberglass, and my dad hasn't used it in years, so it's a learning experience for sure.
We got the foam cut down and shaped to where it was ready for the fiberglass.

We also trimmed off the back side of the center two columns to make it meet the back edge of the trunk lid instead of hangin over a half inch or so. It will look a lot better this way. So we trimmed that down and filled those two sections with foam, let it dry then shaped it also. Then everything got fiberglass.

Tomorrow I'm planning on starting the body filler step, and getting it close to ready to spray with primer. I've got a lot of grooves and gouges to get rid of in the "paint" that's on it already. It's got literally like 4 different colors of paint on it and it's all flaking off, and there's spots where it looks like someone took a grinder to it, so it's gonna need a lot of work still, but it should be done in a few weeks since I really only have time to work on it on weekends.

The bondo step is about done, just needs a few scratches filled from the sand paper and the screw driver that the person I got it from apparently used on the top side of it.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to get it in primer and start filling holes on the trunk.

Not to bring down all the great work that you've done, as you've done some great work...very 4th gen-ish if you ask me meeting the center spoiler with the sides, and it works perfectly. But is there any space inbetween the body spoiler piece and the trunk spoiler? It just looks really tight if not touching. I'd hate for you to do all that work, and slamming your trunk (if you don't have a pull down unit) or just driving and flexing to start scratching paint and ruining things.

Probably what I'll end up doing is similar to the spoiler, fill it with the expandable foam and then fiberglass it. I'm gonna start on that tomorrow actually.

the center of my outers need shaved down a bit to be flush with the side of the ext pieces. im thinking of sanding the back edge of the ext pieces to match up with the hi rise, mine and yours are a bit wider than the hi rise outers.
i hate fiberglass, im gonna use your idea with the foam then just bondo over it

Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, started fiberglass 3/5/11
I thought about shaving the "dove tail" at the back of the quarter panel caps, but I really like this look better. Plus if I ever decided to go back to stock all I'd have to do is fill a couple of holes I drilled in the trunk lid and bust out the bondo I'm about to fill in where the 3rd light was.
Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, started fiberglass 3/5/11
i was thinking that as well, if i want to go back. if i do go back, im not using the brake light. i wonder how different the stock spoiler would look with the sides shaved down a bit??
it sucks for me tho, im working in a garage with no electric power, just hand tools lol. my garage is 2 doors away from my parents garage that has all the 'good' stuff , electricity, power tools lol i hate running back and forth with a big *** spoiler saying to myself, " is that what i wanted to do? is that how it has to go? oh wait i forgot what i wanted to do !" lol
i going to pull it over tomoro to get some work done with the spoiler and my 4th gen interior.
i need to get some pics posted of my progress

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod
I have a question off the subject, My friend just bought a 91 Z28 TPI 350
Has a spoiler in the back, and I was wondering if they made a Iroc in 91?
His dash emblem reads Iroc Z28. I read the specs and says they did'nt make a Iroc this year. Is this true?

1990 was the last year for the IROC-Z, dash emblems are easily interchangeable.

Interchangeable, yes. Easy, no. The wiring is totally different between 90-92 and older cars. You'd need to basically re-wire the whole car to change to the newer dash.

Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, started fiberglass 3/5/11
Back on topic:
After using some high build primer, it looks good enough that after a very thin coat of filler and another coat of primer, it will be ready for some blue. There are just a few spots on the top that need to be filled still, but they are so minor it's not going to take much at all.
I think it will be finished next weekend, then I'll concentrate on the trunk lid.

No fitted pictures because it's still wet.

how are you going to match the paint completely. did you paint the car yourself in the first place and know how much you used or what? just curious on that. looks excellent nonetheless

I've got leftover paint from the 90 IROC-Z we painted which was the same color. I pulled the paint code from my car when we painted it.

Thanks!
Thank you

I'm not sure, it depends on where the route is I suppose. The only reason I went on the one stop last year is because it was relatively close to me.

No but I still have a few things left from it and another 92 I parted out. Some if it is too large to ship easily though like the ground effects and front and rear bumpers.

Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, started fiberglass 3/5/11
I got a little more work done on it today. I took out the two remaining studs on the bottom side and will be putting in 4 longer studs held in with epoxy so they will go through both layers of sheet metal on the trunk lid and I can use washers on the bottom side. It's a lot cleaner than drilling out a bigger hole inside the trunk and only run the bolts through the first layer.
I also started foaming the trunk lid where the tail light was. I'm going to fill in with as much foam as I can, then put it into shape and fiberglass over it, same process as with the spoiler.

Yea it got rid of most of the rattling I had coming from the license plate with my subwoofers. I've had that on there for probably 5 or 6 years now.

thought id share these. guy who works at a lot of the same places i do ownes this Z. its in bad shape with tons of miles on it, bunch of bad body work but it does catch your eye when it goes by. he hept the Z spoiler flat to the bottom and shaved the convertible part to make a smooth line between the 2. I know he didnt do it himself, but the person who did do it had the right idea. I can get more pics if you need a better look, i see the car 2 or 3 times a week.

The paint code in the door jam is WA 9591.
It needs a very very small amount of bondo on the bottom edges of the center supports and then a few spots need to be dusted with primer then it's ready for paint. We also started on the trunk lid tonight too. We put fiberglass on the underside of the original holes and will be filling the rest of it tomorrow and sand it down and primer it. The whole thing is being repainted.

All of the extra holes in the trunk lid are filled with fiberglass, the tail light recessed area has been filled with expandable foam, fiberglass, and then bondo. It still needs a slim coat of bondo and it will be just right.

Unfortunately I ran out of time today, the plan is to get it in blue tomorrow though. Everything is ready to go just need to wet sand it real quick before it gets sprayed.

Finally some color! It's looking really good so far. There's a coat of clear on it now and tomorrow it'll get wet sanded and another one to two coats before it's sanded one last time, polished, and installed. The last coat(s) of clear will go on tomorrow and I plan to have it installed this coming weekend. The area where the tail light was you'd never know it was there

yeah but those 30 hours were semi figuring out the best way to approach some of the issues you came in contact with. once you got a rythm down you could have those things done in no time. but yeah youd probably have a few people asking for them made, so if you had the time it could be a good way to make some extra cash

I understand what you mean, but it really doesn't apply much here. There's a LOT of trimming and fitting, trimming and fitting, filling with bondo and fitting, more filling with bondo then fitting, then sanding, and if you sanded it to much, fillling with bondo and then fitting it again...over and over until it's right. It's not something where you'd eventually have a clear cut method of doing it like if I had a mold made for it where I could mass produce them (wouldn't that be nice?

Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, painted 3/27/11
I just started my project 1990. I am looking for a spoiler on Third Gen and can't find one, can anyone help? (Also maybe not the place to ask this: I can't post in classifieds either! Why not, how do I contact admins?)
ANYWAYS I'M LOOKING FOR THE 91-92 WING, the only one I found was 169+50 isn't that too much?

Re: '91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, progress on my '91 vert
If anyone can help me get a high rise spoiler for Camaro, I apprecitate feedback. I haven't been able to post in classifieds, is this because I'm new on the site? Sorry for posting this here but I AM looking for a spoiler....

Did you check the classifieds rules? I'm pretty sure there's a time limit on how long you have to have been here or a number of posts to make a post in the classifieds. You won't find one for sale here though, this is my project thread.
