Convertible Top "frame" not original HELP!!
Convertible Top "frame" not original HELP!!
Ok i bought this 89 iroc this past winter and only have been driving on nice days because the brand new top that the PO installed pealed free off bow #5. My brother (a car guru guy) and I tried to no avail to fix it. There just is not physically enough width to the top i have to make it work. We tried screwing it in and everything. I think i have a frame from a 91 or 92 model year. I remember the PO saying that he replaced the frame some time ago and that is why he thought the top peeled in the first place.
Can someone tell me if their was physically a different width from the 89 to 91 or 92 models? I am short on the sides for bow #5 by about 1" total. if i loosen the top, the bottom end points up and it looks terrible.
I want to get a new top, but i don't want the same thing to happen again.
Also should i get vinyle top or a cloth top. What do most people prefer and why?

If its a ASC car the top dimensions/hardware were changed at some time.
I see ads for replacement ASC tops listed in TWO sizes.
Possibly they bought the wrong top?

OK, I've considered sharing this for awhile on the ASC 'verts. There are guys more qualified than me on this board that probably have the documentation to support or clarify this issue or maybe throw the BS flag, but here are my observations from owning an 88, & 89 'vert, and from purchasing a complete top from a friends 91.
The top frames appear to be identical on the 88 and 89 with the dimensions for bow #4 the same.
The complete 91 top I scored was in much better shape than the one on my 89, and one day I installed it. The 91 top was a total bolt in and all the latches and seals fit perfectly, BUT bow #4 is noticeably and dimensionally taller on the later model tops. I assume this might be for more head room for the rear seat passengers.
Thumbs up for topsonline. There instructions are a little vague, but customer support is #1.
I prefer the look of the earlier top with the lower bow, and when the 91 top gave up, I reinstalled my original frame, and ordered a new top for it. I've never installed a top before, but topsonline got me through it. I'd have no problem doing it again.
Hope this helps.

Cloth is by far the top pick. Vinyl tops, to me, are kind'a tacky. Kind'a reminds me of those old '70's and '80's landau tops. Not a big fan. Cloth is still a modern material used on even today's high end convertibles. Timeless.
