Re: Convertible headliner??????

I think Topsonlines sell a headliner kit, but states that its only for used for vehicles originally equipped with one. I bought my top there, but did not buy the headliner kit. I washed my headliner with soap and a hose

Re: Convertible headliner??????

Here is the reply I got from topsonline.

Hi Ben,
89 model does not have the required attachment points from inside in order
to attach a headliner, I personally don't recommend installing a headliner
on 89 model, since your car was not equipped with one it may rip while
raising or lowering the top or the plastic attachment that snap on the top
frame from inside might come lose also while raising or lowering the top.
Thank you
Vic

Now I gotta see what he's talking about

Re: Convertible headliner??????

It would be nice to see the difference between the two frames to see if they just welded some tabs to the same frame.

Re: Convertible headliner??????

I have a 91 vert with a headliner. I got my top and new headliner from electron top...probably the best quality stuff I have ever seen. According to electron the only way to have a 3rd gen vert with a headliner is to have a top with a headliner from the factory. I guess the frame is different because when I went to order and said i needed a headliner they asked if it had a factory headliner. I said it did and they knew exactly top what to send. They said all tops with a headliner take certain part numbers.

Re: Convertible headliner??????

I believe the later tops, had a different bow towards the back, to give more headroom for the rear seat passengers. Could that be part of the difference also?

Re: Convertible headliner??????

If memory serves
86-88 Narrower top
89 - Unique
90-91 - Almost identical to the 89 top, but has headliner provision
92 - similar to 90-91, but has a different attachment point behind the doors, something like 3 bolts vs 2 bolts..

If I remember correctly, you can install a 90-91 on a 85-89,

I would not take my word for it, but it is to the best of my recollection.

Re: Convertible headliner??????

My 90 Iroc has a head liner, some of the attachment points are velcro on sides. Liner is falling down on front corners by the latch handle.

Just picked up a semi project Iroc 90 vert ... still learning.

This is incorrect. You can NOT bolt a frame from late 88-92 onto an 86 thru early 88 because the front bow latches are totally different.

86-thru early 88 - twist in style front latches. This changed in late 88 to a rotating tab style latch and the frame got one inch wider at the top bow.

then in 91 they added the headliner which changed the 4th bow slightly and added some additional small attachment provisions for the headliner.

but the answer to the question is YES, you could bolt a 1991-92 frame with a headliner onto a late 88 thru 92 car. But not an 86 thru early 88 car.

Re: Convertible headliner??????

Well, since this thread has been revived. My 89 has a headliner and has the original top frame. My friends all original 89 has it too. He had a custom HL made from real suede I went cheap and made mine from faux suede (but he copied me though ).
The frame has small velcro squares above the window seals and the old liner had velcro strip i think, but it didn't stick anymore. I didn't bother replacing that when i made mine.
