How much should I pay??
I have my eye on a white 1988 convertible with 44000 miles on it.
305 5 SPD car. Grey cloth interior.
Can I please have some input on what would be a fair price for this car?
MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Need more details. Somewhere between 4k and 20k. 40k miles is low, thats nice.

If you are not familiar with these cars i would not assume it is all original. A lot of things can appear that way and the price these days definitely favors full original examples. With no pics to see for myself and only the low mileage to go by I would say 7-8 grand for an RS.

Or Vinny's 6 to 8 thousand suggestion sound more reasonable? The owner is wanting to get 10 for it which sounded kind of high but when I went searching for other examples I had trouble finding any.

If it were an IROC 305 TPI 5 speed $10,000 would be a fair price. I wouldn't pay that for a run of the mill Camaro. Nothing desirable about this one. The seller will want to make you believe this carries the same value as an IROC or Z28.

If it's really clean and you really like it and it's nearly original and doesn't have any rust, I don't think $10k Canadian is an unreasonable price for any low mileage third gen vert. Especially in Canada, how many are going to be available for purchase in equal or better condition...especially in a convertible body style. See if you can negotiate, but if you really like and want it I don't think you'd feel bad about spending $10k Canadian on that car if it's as clean as you say.

If the paint, convertible top and interior are all in very good condition then $8,000 US or $10,000 Canadian is within reason. Expect to do a bit of basic maintenance like fluid changes, belt, maybe tires etc.
I found an excellent one owner RS Convertible with all receipts and records in 2014 for $5600 US. Car had 109,000 miles. Interior good top was fair and the paint need attention. Short version ender up repainting the car. So I'm into the 100,000 ÷ RS for about $14,000 with new paint , new top, new tires and a couple of repairs like fuel pump and rear end. Car is rust free and a real head Turner. Was worth it to me.
Be sure to have a respiratory fund of at least $1500 if you buy car - cause you knew know with older cars - even good ones that are almost 30 years old.
