Rear Speaker Replacement
1987 Z28 Vert. Has anyone removed/replaced the rear speakers.Looks as though you have to remove the entire panel to be able to remove the cloth grill cover before you can get to the speaker mounting screws/nuts.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
It is actually pretty easy, but yes you do have to pull the whole panel to remove the speakers and/or the grill. There are only a few screws that hold the whole panel in place. Once you remove those, the whole panel slides out pretty easily. After that it is pretty obvious how to remove the speaker. You can fit larger speakers in that area, but you'll probably have to cut some of the panel to maximize the additional sound. Either way, you aren't getting any good bass out of the rear speakers like you can with the coupes.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
I replaced my rear speakers in my 91 TA with 6X9's. I had to cut a little out of the backing and added a little bit of a spacer to it and I ordered from EBAY a speaker grill that would fit on the outside of the panel. That way, I could replace the not great speaker with something that would sound great even with the top down. Very happy with the results. You will understand once you pull the panel out.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
The first two replies are spot on. The panel needs to come out before you can get to the speakers. One thing I would add. Be careful of the replacement speaker you use. The size/shape is important but the depth is very limited in this area and your new speakers cannot be too tall if you want the grill to fit flush on the interior side of the seat panel.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
Wasn't easy but replaced rear and front speakers.Rear speakers were not 6x9.They were 6.5.Bought Kicker CSC65 300w.Holes were closest but did not match up to stock.Magnet has to be 2.5 in or less.
Removed back seat bottoms(13mm)to make panel removal easier.Grill cover held on by 4 3/8 nuts.Grill cover and arm rest(2-11mm nuts)must be removed to access all 4 speaker screws.Cut out for speakers is only about 3/4 of the diameter of the woofer(arm rest in the way). Used Turbowire Adapter(72-4500)no wire cutting.
Front speakers were a little easier but had to drill secondary holes in the speaker mounting bracket(remove 4(7mm screws)makes mounting eaiser.
Used
Pioneer TS-G460 for front
3.8x6x1.6 inches
Sound is good can use lower level to have same loudness.Little more base in the rear.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
The 2-3/4" depth is what I was talking about. Note that it is the "top mount depth" and you will be mounting from the back side so it will be a little deeper into the cavity. As I recall, there is a structural rib that crosses the area that will interfere with the magnet if the speaker goes in too far but that is in my TA, not a Camaro.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
As well as I remember it was about a 1inch deep one that I mounted on the seat side of the trim. I bought it on EBAY. You have to do a little taking the panel on and off and cut your hole for the 6 X 9 in exactly the right place because of the support behind the panel. I also added about a 1/4 inch piece of MDF or plywood between the panel and the new grill. That was one of the best things I think you could do to get really good sound out of a set of speakers. You can hear the music really well even with the top down. Hope that helps.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
My panels were already cut by the previous owner to 6x9. However, as previously mentioned you need to get something really shallow for it to fit. Mine sticks out roughly ½ inch and will had to mod it with MDF and then a grill which I'm not happy about. But, what can you do other than going smaller and having to settle with lesser quality sound. I opted for going with 6x9's and dealing with it. Good luck!

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
Dragonmas,
I noticed on your quarter panels where you rear speaker is that the velour looks fairly new. Did you replace that recently? I am in the process of replacing mine and would like to know. Thanks!

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
Didn't replace, they were/are very well maintained. I've had car since 2000. They could have been recovered before I owned.
