The dealer I got my T/A ('89 305, Tpi, V8, Mobil 1 5w30, Auto trans) from doesn't take good care of customer's cars. Someone blew the head gasket, I believe, just before they gave me the car. So I take it in for repair and the tech used too much gasket sealer so that when things were bolted together, some of the gasket compound partially plugged the coolant passages. I always wondered why it heated up so fast. A few years later more work was being done in the same area and the tech that took things apart commented to me that he couldn't believe how much gasket compound was all over the place. I believe it even squeezed into the cylinder volume too and got partially burned (my oil analyses were coming back showing high amounts of silicon in the oil, & it wasn't sand.) Since this was fixed, I haven't had a single episode of extreme heating. It still gets hot idling in traffic, but not as fast, & only till the second fan comes on. Once I get moving about 45 mph, the temp is in the normal range withing one minute. It didn't do this before the excess gasket compound was cleaned up. I hope this clears up some of your headaches. Jim.
