a\c cooling problems

I finallyhave my car running btw 170-190 all the time. highway, city, stop and go. the only remaining problem is with the air on in traffic.......... it will inch up and up to about 230-235 or so. any suggestions would be appreciated.
i have a 1982 z-28 with 305, 160 stat, lower air dam intact, 3 core radiator, fan is in good shape, no trash btw the rad and a/c cond. water pump is new
problem only arises with air on in stop and go traffic. not an electric fan set up by the way

Replace the mechanical fan with two 14" electric Perma Cool high cfm fans from Summit or Jeg's for about $84 a piece.

thats where i was headed next......will it make that big of a difference? and should they both be wired to come on with the ignition??

It'd be useless to have the fan on all the time since at speed, natural airflow with the air dam is more than enough to keep temps down. I'd install the fans and hook up a switch you can control it with. On my setup, I wired myself a switch to my fan basically feeding it power from the lighter's 12 V line. At operation, it functions just like normal, but if needed I can simply switch it on. You could also hook it up to a thermostat switch that comes on at a preset temperature. Many options here.

You can also hook it up to your a/c feed so when the a/c is on your fan is on, make sure not to hook it up to the fan(in car) as that functions alo when the heater is on, so if you want heat, its obviously cold outside and that'd just be a waste of a fan.

Just ensure you have a decent wiring diagram to work with if you're electrically timid...

the switch your refering to is for the second fan...correct? one fan needs to pretty much run all the time. but the second fan could be wired to a temp sensor to come on when needed...ex. a/c on or primary fan not enough ??????????? thanx for the input....

neither fan needs to run all the time because neither fan needs to run while going down the freeway and neither fan needs to run while the car is warming up. if i was going to have two 14" electric fans i would wire them so that they come on at the same time and turn off at the same time. with a manual switch you have infinite control and thats good. if you dont like the idea of having to switch your fans on and off manually(trust me its not a big deal), you can always buy relays and such from jegs or summit or something. remember to use all 10 gauge wire and 30 amp automotive switch which can be bought at radio shack.
